C H A P T E R 2 4_

Start from the beginning

I clutch my gun and check around the corner, finding only an old newspaper rolling across the cracked concrete, my fingers stiff around the rough handle of my gun as my finger rests gently on the trigger. I faintly consider the fact that it might have been the wind but I dismiss that immediately because a good spy knows the wind couldn't have made that specific noise. I see something move from the corner of my eyes and move to―a bird flies away from its place by the trash can...

I lower my weapon.

"Uh Natasha?" I hear Bruce say.

"Yeah I know. It's just a bird," I assure him as I put my gun in my holster. I turn around slowly but I what I see are two cops with their guns pointed at my partner, his hands in the air.

Immediately I raise both my pistols to their heads in defense, scared for Banner's life. But I'm not sure he can be killed so easily. "Trust me guys you really don't want to do this."

"Who are you?" They ask.

Bruce gives me a look of suspicion, wondering if we should tell them or not... but his eyes say the latter.

"We're fighting against an army of blood hungry aliens and you are here picking a fight with one of your own?" I ask them in disbelief.

They hesitate, their mannerisms realizing I have a point even though they do the best they can to not show it. They are in a battle for what they should do in a situation so unprecedented. I can tell. That's my job.

"We're headed to the coast to get out of here..." Banner says.

"Where did you come from?"

"South. Near the border to Philadelphia," I answer as I put my weapons back. They're not a threat. They're just trying to do their job even though they don't know what that is anymore.

"How did you make it this far alone?" his partner asks.

"We..." I look at Banner... "We used to have a larger... company..." I don't think I have to fake any emotion here because immediately my thoughts go to everyone who died on the Helicarrier: Agent Hill... Coulson... ...Fury... I never got to say goodbye to him.
