Chapter Fifteen

Austin (Day 16)

My head was under the hood of the tractor, trying to figure out what was keeping the damn thing from running. It was barely five in the morning and Ellis and the rest of the guys were already in the fields on the outskirts of their land. I didn't mind being left behind, honestly, I was thankful for the peace and quiet. Plus, this was the best time of day to get a few things done without being scorched by the hot sun. Dew was still covering most of the earth's surfaces and light fog floated through the air, making things a little more difficult to see than normal. But it was still better than working during the hottest time of day which was perfect for me because I still hadn't grown accustomed blistering heat of the Mississippi Delta.

I had been burying myself in work the past few days. Waking up at the crack of dawn and staying out in the shop well after the sun had set. After the surprise dinner guest showed up a few nights ago, my mind had been going fucking insane. The way he sat so fucking close to her at the dinner table. His hand covered hers as she reached out towards the family-style dinner platters in front of her. He chuckled at everything she said and would then reach out and tug on a piece of her hair after telling her how funny she was. I knew what was happening. He was trying to make nice with her and that was the only way he knew how to do it. String her along a little fucking more. It may have worked when she was sixteen, but the woman sitting sandwiched between us at that round table knew better. I could see it in her bright green eyes. She didn't hang onto his every single fucking word. Nor did she lean in when he'd wrap his arm around the back of her chair. For that, I was proud.

That wasn't the reason I'd distanced myself from her during the past few days. No-that was all Jack Bowen's doing. After watching him embarrass himself for what seemed like hours-I politely excused myself and stepped outside to smoke. While I was out there, he paid me a visit and gave me an ultimatum.

Stay the fuck away from her or I'll tell Ellis.

It was juvenile. More so, it was fucking petty. I knew he didn't know a damn thing-especially when he blabbed on and on about her fragile innocence.

She's a damn virgin, Austin. Never done anything with a man before. I know, unquestionably, that you have higher expectations than that. Don't prey on her innocence. She deserves better than that.

Let me start off by saying, I'm not fucking scared of Jack Bowen. At this point, it was his word against mine. He had no fucking proof. I'd decided to stay away was because his begging and pleading only made me want to do one thing. Walk into that house and up those stairs into her room, put her on her hands and knees, and fuck her until she screamed and the whole god damn house knew what we'd done.

That's the one and only reason I'd stayed away. I was getting way too close to not caring who knew what had happened.

The wrench I had been using to tighten the screws on the battery fell off the top of the tractor and landed right on the ground. When I stepped down from the ladder, I heard the slamming of the back door. A few seconds later, Eliza crossed my vision stopping along the gravel towards the barn wearing nothing but a white fucking nightgown that clung to her body in all the right places and flowed down her legs, just above her calves. You could see straight through the thin material. Her feet were covered by rain boots that looked like she'd hastily shoved them on as she was exiting the house. In her hand, was a gun.
