"Anuh everybody a guh like mi...."
The sound of my alarm wake me up out of my sleep playing 'Likes' by Chronixx. I took the sheets off me and sat up in bed. I took up my phone off the bedside table and shut off the alarm. Then realization hit me. It's the first day of senior year in high school! Oh my God! I'm so excited! I jumped off the bed and ran to the bathroom just to get knocked down by someone bigger than me.
"Shena! Look weh yuh a guh nuh", my big brother Adrian gruffed helping me up.
I look up at my big brother. His black hair was dripping wet and a towel was hanging over his shoulder.
"Sorry bro", I said going into the bathroom closing the door behind me.
After taking a shower I went back to my room to get dressed for school. When I finished getting dressed I look at myself in my full-length mirror. Burgundy v-neck knife pleat uniform, white button down dress blouse with burgundy strips on the collar and sleeves, brown socks and brown shoes is the uniform of all senior girls at the Maggotty high school.
It's finally my last year in high school. The year when we prove to everyone all that we have learnt throughout our 5 years in high school(including senior year) with the CXC(Caribbean Examination Council) examinations starting next year/term April.
I went downstairs to the dining room. My stepfather David was sitting at the head of the table drinking coffee, reading the newspaper and talking to my mother who was busy in the kitchen. Dad(yes I call my stepfather dad) is a Police Superintendent and my mom owns a clothing boutique and a hair salon.
My real father died in a car accident when I was 8 years old and Adrian was 10. He was an Businessman. Two years later my mom met David. They fell in love, got married and had my little sister Brianna.
Adrian was also sitting at the table gobbling up his food like he hasn't eaten in ten years.
"Good morning Mom and Dad", I said sitting down beside Adrian.
"Yuh cya tek time", I said looking at Adrian.
"Nope. Mi hungry", Adrian said with his mouth full.
"Yuh always hungry", I said rolling my eyes.
"Good morning sweetie. You look nice this morning mi baby", Mom said smiling at me and placing my breakfast in front of me.
"Morning princess. Ready for senior year?" Dad asked looking at me.
"Thanks mom. And yes Dad, I'm ready. I'm anxious to start senior year. It's gonna be great", I said smiling then taking a bite of my food.
"You sound very confident for someone who has the terrifying CXC examinations to do next year. I'd be scared. Heck I'm overwhelmed about starting upper six this year. Sixth form is stressful yo", Adrian shrieked annoyed. He's in sixth form at St. Elizabeth Technical High school.
"Yes I'm confident because I will be working and studying very hard to pass all my exams", I said confidently.
"That's my girl", Dad said smiling at me. "As long as you believe in yourself that you can do something you will achieve it. You should have more confidence in yourself Adrian because I know you can do it".
"I know Dad. But I just get a little doubtful sometimes", Adrian said.
"Listen to me you two. I have faith in both of you and I know that whatever you put your my mind to you can do it. Just have confidence in yourselves", Mom said looking at Adrian and I with reassurance.
"You're right Mom. I'll try", Adrian said.
"Yes mom", I said.
"Good morning everybody", Brianna said sitting down beside me.
"Good morning Bri. Ready for your first day in grade one at prep school?" I asked looking at her.
"I don't know. I'm kind of scared", she answered sadly.
"Don't be scared lil sis just be yourself. An if a bwoi trouble yuh just mek me know me will deal wid them", Adrian said and I laughed.
"Don't listen to your brother baby. And you don't have to be scared everything will be okay", Mom said.
"Okay Mommy", Brianna said laughing.
"Now hurry up guys you don't wanna be late on your first day of school", Mom said.
Adrian and I ran upstairs to the bathroom.
"Yow me reach ya first!" He shouted.
"Yuh lucky!" I shot pushing him aside then shut the bathroom door.
"Wait mofo!" I yelled. He thumped the door and I laughed.
After brushing my teeth I let Adrian into the bathroom then went to my room. I checked myself in my mirror, grab my things then went back downstairs. I got my lunch money from Dad, told mom bye then left for school.
I got to school ten minutes early so I took out my phone to text my friends when I heard someone scream my name. So I turn around just to be engulfed in hugs.
"Too..tight..can't...breathe", I choked.
"Sorry babe", my friends Saneke, Zoya and Camesha said letting me go.
"Y'all ready for senior year?" Camesha asked.
"Hell yea!" Zoya said smiling.
"Totally", I said.
"Not a chance", San said.
"Me neither", Cam said nodding at San.
"Why not?" I asked them both.
"Becoz it's gon' be hard. It's the last year of high school and CXC is coming up. I'm scared", Cam said sadly.
"You ain't got nothing to be scared about. Look, I know CXC is gonna be hard. But as long as we work hard and study hard we'll be okay. Right Zo", I said confidently.
"Right Shena. Shena and I got your backs. If you don't understand something we'll help you get it, like always. C'mon now, relax girls", Zoya said smiling at San and Cam.
"Okay then", San said.
Just then we heard a beeping sound. We check our phones and Zoya was the one who got a message. She was smiling from ear to ear.
"Lover bwoi a text", San said smiling at Zoya. Cam and I laughed.
"Yea. He just wanted to know if I'm at school already", Zoya said blushing.
"Aww. How sweet. He's checking up on her", San gushed.
"And she's blushing. Oh my God", I said laughing.
"I think it's cute how you and Akeem love each other Zo, but I'm staying far from them crosses bwoi ya. Me a focus on school and only that", Cam said to Zoya.
"I know right. Y'all know I don't have luck with these niggas so me nah guh down that road anytime soon", I said.
"It's good that y'all focusing on school but please remember that not every bwoi stay suh", San said.
"Look who's talking. Miss lesbian", Cam said to San. Zo and I laughed.
"Uh.. That's 'bisexual', bitch", San said rolling her eyes.
Just then the bell rang signaling that it's time for general devotion.
"Its devotion time y'all let's go", I said. So we went to assembly.
