Elizabeth
[el-liz-uh-beth]
Y'all probably knew how to pronounce Elizabeth but whatever.
~~The first group~~
(I was gonna make this kinda formal but screw that... HELLO FRIENDS HOW ARE YOU GUYS TODAY?)...
By the time we were done eating it was about 7:15. Like the days before, no one really knew what to do. The time after dinner had become just awkward downtime. I started talking to Ted and Gally. I don't really know why I did, but they seemed like pretty cool guys, not chill, but cool. Both of them were way too confident in themselves. At this point I wouldn't even call it confidence; it was just pride. We talked about anything and everything, and I laughed like actually laughed with them. It's kinda hard to actually laugh when you're in such an unstable environment. In those 2 hours that we all talked, our friendship grew to the point where we were all insulting each other left and right. It also somehow grew to them starting to call me Liz instead of Elizabeth. I suppose in normal circumstances people don't become that close of friends that quickly, but I guess when you can't remember anything you kinda have to make friends more quickly than normal.
By the next time I looked at my watch, it was about 9:30, and I was getting tired. I walked to where all of our sleeping bags were and just collapsed into my "bed". In the Glade, I discovered that I'm a light sleeper, and I decided that I really fucking hate being a light sleeper. It really sucks, but I also discovered that I can fall asleep relatively quickly. Based on all of this, my sleeping schedule was really screwed up. I thought about all of these things as I drifted asleep.
<><>
I woke up after what felt like minutes, but when I looked at my watch, had actually been hours, about 5 hours actually. It was 1:30 in the morning, and I was awake. I looked around for the source of whatever woke me up and saw someone sitting up in their sleeping bag. Usually, Newt was the only one awake when I woke up, but this was someone else, someone with longer hair. It was Ted. I sat up, my excessively loud sleeping bag alerting Ted that I was also awake.
"Can't sleep?" I asked.
A tired 'Yeah' was the only answer I got.
"Wanna go for a walk or something?"
Another tired response, only this time it was 'Sure' instead of Yeah. I tried to make conversation as we got up.
"I think this is the first time that I've ever seen Newt asleep, poor guy."
"Yeah."
We walked in silence for a while. It wasn't an awkward silence, it was just thinking silence. We eventually got to the forest and walked in. I looked around, trying to take in everything I could. This was proving difficult since I had forgotten a flashlight, which was stupid of me. Luckily, Ted had apparently grabbed his before we left and handed it to me. "You're useless, you can't even remember your own damn flashlight." He said. I could hear the smile in his voice. I responded by pointing the flashlight in his face.
"At least I don't eat like 3 cans of soup for every meal." I shot back. It was a stupid comeback, and I knew it but I was tired. Ted pretended to look offended.
"DID YOU JUST CALL ME FAT??" He asked, his voice cracking as he tried to hold back his laughter. "YOU SHOULD KNOW I HAVE A VERY HIGH METABOLISM! unlike someone I know." He muttered this last part just loud enough for me to hear him. I lightly punched his arm.
"Are you calling me fat now?" Apparently, I was a better actor than Ted because he started to apologize. I immediately broke character and started laughing. We were both still laughing when we reached the corner where the south and the west walls met. We turned right and started walking down the west wall, still talking and making fun of each other.
We hadn't walked that far when Ted seemed to notice something that I didn't. He started walking ahead, a serious expression on his face. He stopped at a seemingly random point on the wall and started staring at the wall. I was too far behind him to see what he was looking at, but his eyes went wide as he said, "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT UGLY ASS THING?"
"Oh, you found a mirror? That's good, I guess I don't even know what I loo-" Ted cut me off by grabbing my wrist and pulling me so that I could see whatever he was looking at. I didn't know what to expect, but I could never have prepared myself for what I saw.
In the concrete wall was a piece of glass, no a window into the maze. That alone was terrifying enough, but that part wasn't even remotely scary compared to the thing that roamed the hallway that the window allowed you to see. The thing that I saw was very obviously a mix of animal and machine. I had no idea how that was even possible, but the creature before me seemed to prove that it was. The monster was huge, it had many "arms" that had an obvious purpose: to inflict harm.
The thing started to move closer to the window. I went stiff, hoping that somehow not moving would prevent it from seeing me. The creature started moving again, but in a different way this time; it started rolling. When it rolled, it made a sort of clicking noise. Suddenly, it pounced, almost like a giant cat, onto the wall where the window was located. I couldn't help but let out a scream, apparently, Ted couldn't either. We both fell to the ground trying to get away from whatever that thing was.
I was terrified, but I was safe. Somehow the monster thing didn't hurt me like I expected it to. The "glass" was super thick, and the creature hadn't even cracked it. I got up first and then helped Ted get up. We were both breathing pretty heavily. Neither of us knew what to say, so we just stood there, staring at the "window" into the maze.
I spoke first, "I guess it wasn't a mirror."
"No fucking kidding."
