the initial steps past midnight:
we trudged through thick mud
caught between laughter and whining
full of awkward mishaps and misunderstandings
it felt like we had been here once before
something was familiar to me
noticed how much my voice shook
reprimanding his all-knowing smirk
but even when we'd thrown dirt at one another
we still held our hands out to each other

until darkness consumed him and I turned to the east
