When you've been fighting for it all your life

You've been working every day and night

That's how a superhero learns to fly

I honestly felt like a rebel.

Like, this was the most badass thing I'd ever done.

I agreed to stay over at a boy's house. Me, the girl who cancelled a school camp in 8th grade because her mother said she wasn't 'comfortable' with her daughter being away from her. The girl who didn't whine when she missed birthday parties because her 'mother said so'.

"The guest room is just down the hall, last door." Therese smiled, gesturing down the hall. I nervously nodded and scuttled away, following her directions. I twisted the handle to the last door down the hallway, pushing it open.

"Whaa.. Ohmygod I'm so s-sorry" Max stood in the room, shirtless. He whisked his head around, eyes widening when he saw me, and he awkwardly rushed to put a shirt on. As I quickly shut the door (obviously I wasn't in the guest room), my mind strayed away to the image of shirtless Max. My face became even hotter than it was previously was.

Geez, Sienna, calm down.

I quickly shuffled around and twisted the knob to the door opposite his room, staying very wary this time. Thankfully, this room was empty. No shirtless guy seemed to be lurking anywhere. The bed was neatly made and room was spotless. There was no sign of anyone ever being here.

"The toothbrushes and things in the toilet are all clean" I slightly jumped when I heard Max's voice. I turned around to see him, wearing a shirt, leaning against the doorframe. When our eyes connected he gave me a sincere smile, and held out some clothes. "These are my sister's. Don't worry, they're clean" he smiled. I took a step forward and quietly thanked him as I took the clothes. We then just stood there in awkward silence.

"So... You can go now" I spoke up first, cringing at how lame I probably sounded. He scratched his head and nodded, before exiting. I let out a deep sigh.

As soon as I finished brushing my teeth and grooming my hair, I flopped onto the bed. I couldn't stop the elated sigh that escaped my mouth as my back came in contact with the mattress. It felt like it was stuffed with clouds.

I need to check my phone.

Getting back up, I looked around the room for my phone. I flipped the pillows on the bed and came up with nothing. I slowly patted the whole bed, as though the device could've 'magically' camouflaged with the white bed. I frowned and hurried into the bathroom, looking everywhere, even down the toilet bowl.

Shit. I started panicking. I tried to rewind back to where I could've last left it.

Suddenly, it was like a lightbulb had popped over my head.

I left it in the lounge room, where we were watching movies.

I glanced up at the time and my eyes widened. 2am? I felt slightly uncomfortable sneaking out to go get my phone at this time of night, but I knew I wouldn't get a wink of sleep without the cool, black metal object resting beside my pillow.

I tiptoed to the door and opened it very slowly, begging for it not to creak. When the sliver was big enough for me to leave the room, I quietly stepped out of the room, making sure to land softly on my sore ankle. I was traveling down the hallway, halting when I heard hushed voices.
