Chapter 4

Emily's POV

I made sure to store my surroundings to memory, knowing it might be useful later. We had abandoned the city and were now surrounded by trees. Anton drove leisurely with one hand rested firmly on the wheel and the other resting in his lap. I studied him as he kept his eyes trained on the road. He certainly was a... big guy.

His red t-shirt was wrinkled and clung to his muscular form. He was wearing dark blue jeans that accentuated his long, muscular legs and working boots. I hadn't notice it before but he had a tattoo running down his right arm. The light was shining on it just right and because his hand rested on the steering wheel, it had his arm straightened perfectly. I studied it closely; it was a bunch of red and black vines running down his arm, twisting and tangling. At one point, the vines separate and then join again a moment later, leaving a big circle. I wondered if the job was unfinished; was something meant to be drawn in the circle? Mentally shrugging that off, I moved to his hand that was fisted tightly on the steering wheel. His hands were big and calloused, the marks of physical labor.

As if feeling my speculative gaze, Anton glanced over at me. I met his enchanting eyes for a moment before turning to look out my window. We had been traveling in a tense silence when he finally spoke.

"I guess I should explain... what you saw." He started awkwardly. He shifted in his seat and cleared his throat before continuing.

"As you've probably guessed, the Vander co... er, Christian and his men aren't exactly human." He paused again and I listened more closely. I had had my assumptions but I never had any solid proof of Christian's humanity. "This would probably be a good time to tell you that, like them, my friends and I aren't human; we're not the same as Christian though. Christian is a... well, vampire." He finally got out. My mind immediately connected all the dots. Pale, strong, fast... not to mention the fact that they were always taking samples of my blood. I guess that also explained why Christian bit my arm that last night.

Goose bumps rose on my arm as I recalled the pain. I stared out the window as I let it all sink in; I was kidnapped by vampires.

"And as you probably could have guessed, I'm a werewolf." Let's revise that last thought; I was kidnapped by vampires and saved by werewolves.

 Hmm... interesting scenario.

Looking back at him, I wondered if that meant everyone in his house-the house he was taking me to-were werewolves. As if reading my mind, he spoke again. "Armando and Annabelle are as well... along with all the members of my house... well, pack." He revised. His eyes kept glancing at me. Thinking he wanted affirmation that I understood, I blinked. He seemed to accept this and nodded. He turned his attention back towards the road and set his jaw. Studying him for just a second more, I turned to look back out my own windows. The trees whizzed by so fast it was just a blur of green.
