Chapter 1

Julia's POV

I walk through the school hallway with a frown. I shit you not, there is an actual line of tape that splits the school in half.

Maybe transferring to this place was a bad idea...

The halls are empty because I showed up half way through the day. There are tonnes of classrooms running along either side of the hall, and they all look exactly the same with no label, but each door is a different bold colour.

Apparently I have to find the reception which is usually supposed to be easy to find, but this school is something else. I just stepped into this place and there's already so much regret.

A loud beeping sound breaks the silence of the empty hallway and, in a matter of seconds, the halls become full of students who are all going in the same direction. What's going on?

Well, why don't you follow everyone and find out, genius?

Someone taps me on the shoulder and I turn to find a blond girl smiling at me. "Are you new here?" she asks and I nod. "What team are you on?"

"Um..." I put down my bags and quickly pull out a piece of paper that my mom gave me when she dropped me off just now. "Daredevils."

"Perfect! So am I! Thank god, you seem nice and I need a new roommate, but the people at this school suck so I don't want any of them. Okay, come, let's get to Assembly and I'll take you to reception and explain everything you don't understand later. Cool?" I nod and she smiles then starts walking with me and my dozen of bags right behind her.

Well, she seems nice. It definitely helps to have someone to explain what the heck is going on at this crazy place.

I follow the blonde girl who hasn't told me her name yet, and everyone else, into a large hall. "I'm Julia," I whisper.

"I'm Diana," she whispers back and gestures for me to go sit on the right side of the hall. She follows behind me and sits on a red chair, so I do the same and put all my bags at my feet. I didn't know it was possible, but I look like a tourist in a freaking school. The other grades seem to be sitting on the floor. "The seniors sit on chairs," she explains and I nod.

More and more people start filling in and I notice three people standing in the front on each side of the hall, looking over us like they own us. All six of them have sleeves of tattoos which is weird because there is a strict no tattoos rule which is the one of the first things that come up on the school website.

My eyes land on one of the guys standing on the left side of the hall. He is gorgeous with sandy blond hair, sky blue eyes and lips that look softer than pillows.

"That's Max Holland. He's a spinner, so basically he is one of the people who rule the school. He's hella fine, but he's one of The Dominators, so don't even look in his direction," Diana tells me.

Great, I found something good in this school and I can't even look at it.

One of the girls who are standing in the front of the school steps forward. "Silence!" she shouts and the entire school becomes dead quiet.

Why is everyone listening to one of the students? Where are the teachers or the principal? Who the heck shouts 'silence'? I lean back in my seat and sigh.

There is definitely something wrong with this place.

"Okay, here is your schedule," the receptionist tells me and hands me a sheet of paper. "Since room three hundred and eleven has a space available, you can stay there." She hands me a room key with the number 311 on it - it's the room that Diana is in.

Diana seems really nice and normal. This school, on the other hand, is bat shit crazy. Why did I agree to come here? I thought it was just a normal boarding school.

We walk to the dorm room, dragging my bags along with me. "Okay, you ask questions and I'll explain," Diana says as she unlocks the door and walks in.

I glance around the room and drop my bags on the empty half of the room. "What's a spinner and why do the teams hate each other so much? Why is the school split in half?"

She laughs. "Why don't you start unpacking while I explain? 'Cause we can't be late for class and next session is in an hour so unpack as much as you can," she says and I nod and listen, opening all my bags to unpack. "Okay, so there are three spinners for the each team - The Daredevils and The Dominators are the names of the teams - and the spinners decide what happens in the school. They plan everything and lead everyone. The teachers only give lessons and that's it and the principal makes sure the students are still breathing, but other than that it's the spinners in charge. All spinners get tattoo sleeves as their kind of 'badge'."

I nod in slight understanding. So basically good looking and smart teenagers with tattoo sleeves are in charge of a highschool. Got it. "What about the rivalry, though? Why is it so competitive?"

"It's just the way it has always been. The
Daredevils can't go on the left of the school and The Dominators can't go on the right. Even the teachers can't cross the line but all the lessons that are given are taught equally and with the same information. The only time the two sides get together are on Mondays for all day competitions, Assembly which is every Wednesday and the party that is hosted for the seniors every Friday night, but even during the parties, the teams are competitive with drinking games and all." As Diana speaks, I stack my clothes into my closet, put my cushions on the bed and take everything I need out, then I stuff the empty suitcases under the single bed.

"Why can't a person on one team date someone, or at least look at someone, from the other team?" I question.

"If two people from opposing teams are caught in love or having sex, etcetera, the punishment is that you are taken out onto the fields and tied next to the other person on two poles and anyone can throw stuff at you or write anything on you. Because of how competitive it is, friends in the group will probably hate you and 'banish' you until you graduate. It's harsh but it is how it is. I guess you can look at the other team, but just don't look at the spinners of the other team."

That's it, I'm leaving this school and moving to Canada.
