Catherine, after five years of isolation, was completely forgotten by the townspeople.

Alastair and Delia had put her to work making bread in the back where no one could never be seen.

One day, at the age of twelve, Catherine had stood rolling dough when she had glanced out the window, into the back courtyard.

A bird stood in a tree, pecking at it. It stopped, turned, stretched its wings, and took off into the sky.

Catherine watched until it had completely disappeared.

She left the dough, and disappeared up the stairs, into her room. She pushed open the window shutters, and climbed onto the sill. Her wings stretched out, and she prepared herself to follow the bird.

She jumped, but did not go far.

Hands grabbed her around the stomach, and threw her violently back into the room.

Alastair stood over her.

He gave her a sharp kick in the ribs, grabbed the collar of her dress, and pulled up.

“The people outside will kill you if they see you,” he said. “So don’t you dare.” He pushed her into the hallway. “Now get back to work.”
