Chapter 1

Rooftops on a High

A cold greasy hand wrapped around Ash’s shoulder and pulled him closer.

“Hello Students of Lincheon Boarding Highschool!” The old man smiled and addressed the students that sat below the stage. “I hope you all have had a wonderful morning! I have a few announcements but first things first…. Meet Ash!” Principal Willham Reaper gestured to his nephew who cowered next to him. “He is my wonderful nephew though I think of him as my own son”

Ash’s uncle ruffled the boy’s hair. Ash stiffened and from up close you could see the tears in his eyes.

“He’s staying with me so be nice to him everyone! Now onto the new lunch menu…”

Ash’s uncle began to ramble on about the menu. Ash released a breath when his uncle moved away to let him sit back down, he beelined for his seat and curled up in it ignoring the strange stares.

He hated being close to anyone and his uncle was the worst! It was bad enough that there were more than a thousand students in the hall! He didn’t need to be hugged by his uncle while everyone stared at him.

The assembly rambled on and eventually people’s eyes were torn back towards the stage and away from Ash’s cowering figure. Once the meeting was over Ash stood and scrambled around in his bag for his schedule. He had science first which meant he had to head towards the labs. Lucky for him he didn’t need someone to show him the way, spending every Christmas here meant that he knew his way around and didn’t need to talk to anyone. He had bumped into a few familiar faces once or twice that morning but the closest he was to any of them was when he walked into one of them on Boxing Day. So far he hadn’t uttered a word that morning, as the principal’s honorary son he had a room to himself. He was pretty sure his honorary title had nothing to do with it though…

Ash stared at the floor as he walked to self conscious to dare meeting someone’s eye.

While he was distracted a pupil was dashing through the corridor straight towards him. Ash felt his face collide with a firm hard chest. He stumbled and glanced up to the person he had walked into. The boy had natural red hair that hung messily at neck length. His eyes glared down at Ash’s short figure. If Ash wasn’t completely terrified by the boy he would have noticed how handsome his tormenter was. The irritated glint in his eyes made the lilac tones all the more brighter and his pale skin was glowing in the sunlight. He carried himself in a laid back way and gave of a rebellious aura. He wasn’t the kind of person you would want to mess with, at least Ash didn’t.

“Dammit dude! Watch where you’re going you made me drop my books!” A grumpy voice snapped at him. Ash backed away nervously and bent down to pick up the boy’s books. A foot slammed into his rib. Pain flashed in his eyes and it took all his effort not to start sobbing

“That’s what you get for not apologising.”

Ash groaned and continued picking up the persons books silently. He stood up and the red haired rebel shoved him back.

“Don’t get hoity toity with me mista principal’s nephew. I said apologise so do it!”

The rebellious boy glared at him and when Ash didn’t speak anger began to boil in his blood.

Ash’s face was hit by a flying propeller; He flinched back and wiped the spit that had landed on his cheek.

“I… I…” He began, he hadn’t spoken in so long that his voice was gruff and the people around made it ever more hard for him to speak. “Sorry…”
