"Your Highness, the horses have been taken from the stables, they are ready for the men."

I nod towards the guard. "And the men? They have their armor?"

"Yes, and they have been given weapons."

I nod and wave my hand to dismiss him. He doesn't move.

I crease my eyebrows. "Is there something else?"

He swallows. "Well, forgive me for my boldness miss, but, um, don't you have to get ready yourself?"

I follow his eyes down to my torn up dress, my broken shoes, my scratched arm. I release a nervous laugh.

"Well, I suppose I do have to get ready then. Do I have any maids left?"

He nods. "Yes, you have about three. We will recruit more after the war's done."

"Summon them to my room."

He bows and scurries off to find them.

I rush up the stone steps to my room, throwing my tattered shoes off on the way. I stop before the door to my room and inhale a sharp breath. Gently placing my hand on the old wood, I push it open.

A blast of cold air hits me in the face from the window. Why is it open?
