I crack my eyes open to a damp room with stone walls surrounding me. My eyes move to the bars serving as a door to the room. Darien sits outside, his eyes closed.

"You're finally awake," he says softly.

Sharp pains shoot through my head as I recall what happened last night.

"Where am I?" I croak, my throat feeling dry.

He stands up. "That's not important."

"Why are you doing this?" I rasp.

"You don't listen very well, do you? You are the next queen of this kingdom, your mother has been hosting balls, parties, and any other form of celebration she can get her hands on, why? So you could have as much support as possible, she's stacking it up for the day of your coronation."

He comes right up to the bars, the rays of sunlight casting shadows over his face. "But I wonder, what would happen if it became the day of your coronation and you didn't show up?"

My breath catches as I realize what he means. "You want to keep me here long enough for my people to think I'm dead, long enough for them to choose another queen."

He rubs his hands together. "And I already have the perfect candidate lined up, my lovely sister, Ailee."
