Chapter 16: Aftermath.

Sirens.
That's all Alex heard.
Why did this feel so familiar?

Flashes of red and blue consumed Alex. There was yelling all around her.
She was being moved into an ambulance.
Her vision was blurry as she tried to see what was going on.
A gentleman opened the ambulance doors and got in.

"Miss.", "Miss are you okay?" An gentleman with chocolate brown hair and crystal blue eyes asked.

"Where am I?",

"What happened?" Alex asked.

"Miss everything is going to be fine." The gentleman confirmed.

"Where's Julie?" Alex asked starting to try to get out of the ambulance bed.

"Miss, please settle down before you hurt yourself." The gentleman said.

Just as the gentleman was shutting the door, three EMTs were passing the ambulance covering a dead body.
Alex's heart stopped.
She began to feel light-headed.
The last sound Alex heard came from herself.
A defeated cry of, "No!"
Then everything went black.
---
Alex's eyes fluttered open.
Beeping was all Alex was able to hear.
There was a shadowy figure with a long bright red coat hovering over her.
She breathed heavily.
Alex's effort for a scream failed and it caught in her throat.
The figure's hand moved toward her head.
She squirmed in fright.
Just as the hand was about to touch her, the figure saw something in the hospital door window and stopped.
Alex blinked and when she opened her eyes the figure was gone.
---
An older female nurse was checking Alex's vitals as Alex slowly came to.

"I'm sorry dear.", "Did I wake you?" The nurse asked.

"Where am I?" Alex asked.

"Thorneton Medical Hospital." The nurse replied.

"Where's Julie?" Alex asked frantically.

"Who's Julie dear?" The nurse asked.

"The girl that was in my car with me." Alex replied.

A sad expression came over the woman's face.

"What?", "What is it?" "Tell me." Alex demanded.

"It's-it's not my place." The woman said shaking her head.

"Tell me now!" Alex demanded again.
The woman turned her head to face Alex with sad eyes.

Barely above a whisper Alex heard the words,

"She's dead."
---
Mrs. Simmons looked over at Alex in the passenger seat.
She hadn't said a word to anyone for a week after she found out that Julie died.
Alex propped her head on the window. It was the only thing holding her together.
Or at least that's what it felt like.
---
It was five 'o clock when they got home.

"Do you want anything for dinner sweetheart?" Mrs. Simmons asked.
Alex shook her head.
She reached her and as soon as she reached her bed she collapsed into sobs.
Her body trembled with guilt.
---
Downstairs Angela Simmons heard her daughter crying as she stood at their custom made French style island.
Her heart ached for Alex.
But what could she do?
She didn't know how to comfort Alex.
The saddest part was the two people who did know how to comfort Alex were gone.

An idea came to her mind.
Maybe she couldn't comfort Alex, but she knew someone who could.
She picked up the house phone of the counter and started dialing the number.
---
A knock came at the door as Mrs. Simmons answered it with a smile.

"Emily!", "How lovely to see you!" Mrs. Simmons said.

"Hello Mrs. Simmons.", "How are you?" Emily asked with a charming smile.

"I'm as to be expected I believe." Mrs. Simmons replied.

"As I'm sure you've heard Julie is well no longer with us." Mrs. Simmons said.

"Yes.", "Such a tragedy, isn't it?" Emily asked.

"Well Alex has been a little out of it and I was hoping that maybe seeing a friendly face might bring her spirits up."

"Of course." Emily replied stepping into their home.

"Alex's room is right upstairs.", "In the hall, first door to your right." Mrs. Simmons said.

"Thank you." Emily said.

"No thank you!" Mrs. Simmons replied.

What Mrs. Simmons didn't know was that Emily was the Alex of Middle School.
---
There was a knock at Alex's door.
The doorknob turned and in walked Emily Perrigton.

"What the heck are you doing here?" Alex asked with no effort at all to act as if she were happy to see Emily.

"It's nice to see you too." Emily said.

"What do you want Emily?" Alex asked.

"Oh nothing just checking on you as your mom requested." Emily replied casually.

"And why would she do that?" Alex asked.

"Well you see I kind of told her we were friends." Emily said.

"Why?" Alex asked for the last time.

"Because we're total besties!" Emily squealed with fake happiness.

"No the heck we're not!", "I would never be friends with a wench like you!" Alex snarled.

"Huh that's funny considering you were the biggest wench in Middle School." Emily remarked.

"Anyways." Emily continued. "I was actually here to ask what happened."

"I don't see how that's any of your business." Alex snapped.

"Actually it is now and do you want to know why?" Emily asked.

"Why?" Alex asked.

"Because you need me." Emily said with a cocky smile.

"And why is that?" Alex asked.

"Because it's just like before Alex." Emily said.

"You're alone."
