On the Hogwarts Express, Rose reaches out to Albus. It's their fourth year, she wants to be friends again. Albus claims they were never friends. They're cousins and have known each other since they were children. Rose changes the subject. She heard that his father confiscated an illegal Time-Turner.

Scorpius enters, awkwardly complimenting the smell of Rose's hair (flowers and fresh bread) and she leaves. Albus hugs his friend. He explains that they have to get off the train. Scorpius says that it's too late; they already left the station. Albus suggests that they jump.

A discussion circulates around the topic of the Triwizard Tournament and how the last contest was held at Hogwarts, where Harry Potter and a boy named Cedric Diggory were among the competitors. During the final task, they decided to win the tournament together by grabbing the Cup, which transported them to the ceremony where Lord Voldemort had returned to power. There, Cedric was killed because Voldemort had no use for him. He only wanted Harry. Albus confesses to Scorpius that he plans to use the Time-Turner to save Cedric and correct his father's mistake. Scorpius thinks it's crazy, but is persuaded.

Albus and Scorpius reach the roof of the Hogwarts Express, which is moving at full speed. They are going to jump into the viaduct using a Cushioning Charm. Then Scorpius sees the Trolley Witch climb to the roof. She tells them that her job is to make all the sweets and Pumpkin Pasties - which can also be used as grenades if anyone tries to escape. She launches one at them and it explodes! The Trolley Witch states that no Hogwarts student has ever been able to leave the train before reaching their destination. She orders them to return to their seats. Then her hands transfigure into sharp spikes. Albus casts the Cushioning Charm and leaps off the train. Scorpius hesitates, but follows.

At a crowded Ministry meeting, Hermione is trying to call order. She reminds them that the wizarding community has been living in peace for many years. Harry informs them that Voldemort's allies have been on the move. Professor McGonagall reveals that some potion stores were reported missing during the summer, but nothing from the Restricted Section. Hermione reveals that Harry's scar has been hurting again.

The crowd reacts. Harry wonders if those with the Dark Mark have recently felt anything. Draco is offended, speculating that Harry Potter only wants his face in the newspaper again. Harry defends himself and Hermione expresses that, as Minister for Magic, she must take this seriously. Draco offends her by stating that she only got the job because of her friendship with Harry Potter. Ron gets ready to fight, but Draco protests. He only desires to protect Scorpius from the heir gossip that will result if people think Voldemort is back. Harry reminds Draco that this has nothing to do with his son. Hermione says that they need to strategize.

Scorpius and Albus arrive at St. Oswald's. Delphi takes them to Amos Diggory's room, where Albus tells Amos that his father lied about having a Time-Turner, and that they are planning to use it to save Cedric. When Amos is skeptical because of their age, Albus reminds him that his father (Harry) was a teenager when he saved the wizarding world. Still, Amos refuses. As Scorpius and Albus walk away, Delphi tells her uncle to trust them. They are the only people willing to save his son. Amos asks what the boys gain from helping, and Albus tells him that Cedric didn't deserve to die. And he knows what it's like to be "the spare". Amos accepts, and Delphi accompanies them to retrieve the Time-Turner from the Ministry.

Hermione tells Harry, Ginny, and Ron that Draco Malfoy is obsessing over the rumor of his son's parentage, but Ginny thinks he is just grieving the loss of his wife, Astoria. Ron jokingly suggests to Harry that his scar is either hurting because he is worried about Albus, or because he is getting old. Hermione says that they need to prepare in case some part of Voldemort is rising once more. Suddenly an owl drops a letter from Professor McGonagall into Harry's lap. Albus and Scorpius never made it to school.

With a bottle of Delphi's recently brewed Polyjuice Potion in hand, Scorpius hesitates to drink. He's worried about the pain and taste as Delphi transforms into the Minister of Magic, Hermione Granger. Albus becomes his Uncle Ron while Scorpius becomes Albus' dad, Harry Potter. As Harry, Scorpius jokes around by pretending to be a bad father. Then Delphi, Scorpius, and Albus step into the telephone booth entrance to the Ministry of Magic.

Meanwhile, Harry, Hermione, Ginny, and Draco reunite to discuss how the Ministry is looking for Albus and Scorpius. Hermione tells them that the Trolley Witch is furious and that the Muggle Prime Minister will be on the lookout for two missing students. Draco asks if she told the Prime Minister about Harry's scar hurting again and Hermione said no. It had nothing to do with the disappearance of their sons. Draco defends Scorpius, saying that he is a follower, not a leader. That it must've been Albus Potter who convinced him to escape the train. Ginny assumes that Albus chose to run away because of the fight he'd had with Harry the night before. Draco threatens Harry, and that his son had better not be harmed because of this. Then tells Harry that he's always been a curse on the Malfoy family.

Scorpius (as Harry), Delphi (as Hermione), and Albus (as Ron) enter the Ministry. They are on their way to Hermione's office when the real Hermione appears on the scene. Delphi and Scorpius hide while Albus distracts his aunt. Hermione sees Albus/Ron and is surprised to find her husband at work. There is an awkward exchange while Albus/Ron blocks the entrance to her office, where Scorpius and Delphi were hiding. Hermione asks why he is blocking the door. So, in a desperate move, he tells her that they should have another baby or take a holiday. When Hermione tries to enter her office, Albus/Ron kisses his aunt as a distraction. She says that his breath reeks of fish, then turns to leave. Albus waits until Hermione is gone before opening the door to her office.

Once inside, Delphi contemplates where Hermione would hide a Time-Turner. Since the office is filled with bookcases, it must be inside a book. Scorpius randomly grabs a book on Divination, a class that he knows Hermione Granger hated. Opening the book reveals a talking riddle. The book then tries to swallow Delphi, and finally the entire bookcase attempts to devour them. They answer the first riddle (Dementors!) then Albus grabs a book on Dementors and reveals a new riddle. Then Delphi reappears as her true self and solves the next riddle (Voldemort!). While Scorpius was looking for a book on Voldemort, the bookcase swallows Albus, and the Voldemort book reveals the final riddle. In solving it, Scorpius uncovers the Time-Turner hidden inside the book.
