"So," Cole rests his elbow on the table and his chin in his palm as he leans in. "What are you gonna do?"
"Woah, woah, woah," I say cautiously as I put up hands up palms out. "Who said anything about doing something?"
Andrew rolls his eyes. "And you think someone will pull an invisible string and she will automatically gravitate towards you? Don't be a chicken, Brent. Man up for once."
I frown, slightly offended by his words. "I'm manly enough, thanks."
At that, I hear a snort from Cole, which earns him a whack on the side of his head.
"Okay, I will do something at school."
"No, not at school dumbhead. Right now."
"Now?!"
"Yeah," Andrew says casually. "Go accidentally-on-purpose bump into her or something."
"That's so cliché," Rissa pops in.
"You have a better idea?"
Out of my peripheral vision, I notice Liyana getting up to go to the washroom. I have to admit, she looks really good in that outfit.
"Oh, I got a better idea," I said, considering myself to be the genius of the year. "One of you could befriend her and introduce her to the whole group."
Andrew throws me a look. "You have no fucking backbone. We're not doing anything of that sort. You are on your own on this. Now, get lost."
I saw the subject of our current conversation returning from the washroom and stand up abruptly. I have no idea what I am gonna do but it's now or never.
"What are you doing?!" Rissa tugs at my shirt.
I pull away from her. I catch an encouraging gaze from Andrew and and excited one from Cole before I start walking towards Liyana. My heartbeat increases, from nerves, as I near her and I make a split second decision to do as Andrew suggested: accidentally-on-purpose bump into her. But, at the last moment, I chicken out - I swear I am a wimp - and move sideways to avoid touching her as we cross each other in the narrow space between two tables. She is walking with her eyes on the ceiling, so I hope she hasn't noticed my little escape.
But fate will have none of it. It's such a cruel thing. Or maybe, it's a blessing in disguise.
Her white, lacy top got stuck in the button of my shirt.
Great. Just freakin' great.
I clenched my hand and went still, her proximity doing nothing to calm my heart, as I cursed the button. I kept my face straight ahead at my highly amused friends.
She quickly apologizes as she moves to untangle the items. The sweet scent of jasmine and rose enter my nostrils as I take a deep breath to calm my erratic breathing.
When she is done, she moves to go away and a slight panic seizes me. After coming this far, I can't let her get away without even a word. So I started with the most obvious thing.
"Do you go to Darring Dale High?"
When we finally shake hands, I notice that her hands are very soft. Everything about her seemed soft and subdued: from her skin, lips and her voice to the energy surrounding her.
"See you around?" I ask her hopefully.
"Sure," she replied, smiling, which looks way better from up close.
As I walk back to my friends, I have to clench my jaws to keep from grinning broadly. But I still can't keep a small smile off my face.
Andrew gives me a knowing smirk. "How'd it go?"

so i just wanted to clear out some stuff about this snippet. rissa was acting all grumpy because, for the longest time, she has had a huge crush on brent. his sweet and kind personality is what draws her at first. so when during sophomore year, he comes and informs them about his crush, she didn't take it seriously. she thought it was just a small infatuation and would pass just as quickly as it came, that's why she joined her other friends in teasing him. after all no one had heard of this liyana girl, which definitely meant she was a nobody, so rissa didn't feel all that threatened. even when it went on for more than a year, she didn't particularly care, hoping that brent would soon realize that the love he was hoping to find could be found within the person who has been with him all along. so when things started getting serious, she was quickly turning jealous.
I will let you take the story the rest of the way! 😁 You can ask me any questions and I would be more than happy to answer.
Thanks for reading!
