Chapter 13

"I can't believe he did that!" Zainab laughed over the phone as I told her about Hamid and i's slow dance at the wedding, "does he think you people are acting a movie?"

"That's exactly what I thought." I snorted and let the phone rest on my shoulders as I stretched my two hands to get the big pot out of the kitchen drawer.

It was five days after Zita and Joseph's wedding. I was finally giving Zainab the gist of what happened during the wedding. Whatever Hamid did that I thought was cute, Zainab would laugh about it which made me want to stop talking.

Christmas was around the corner which meant more work was on the way. I was in the kitchen talking to Zainab on the phone, and at the same time I was getting out all the kitchen utensils needed for Christmas.

"He likes you oh." Zainab said.

"Shut up he doesn't." I rolled my eyes, "and even if he does, I don't care."

"Miriam finally has a boo. I thought this day will never come." She added, making things more frustrating. "Why don't you like him sef? He's fine now. Don't you know you're missing on those pink lips."

Zainab was the type of friend that will tell you a boy is fine and I can assure you 99% of the time, the boy is NOT fine.

"Zainab it's okay." I said while dropping the pot beside the sink and then held the phone in my hand. "And it's not that pink. Besides he is a soldier for goodness sake."

"So? Idris is a soldier too."

"He became one after you started dating." I argued, "So don't argue."

"I've heard." She said, "Anyhow the mr soldier really likes you. See how he was smiling at you in the market that other day."

"He's always smiling." I complained, "Right from the first day this guy has been smiling at me and it's so annoying."

"Don't pretend you don't like his smile." Zainab said, I could sense her smirking from the other end of the phone.

"If you don't shut up..." I groaned.

"What will you do?"

"You'll see the-"

"Zainab!" A voice shouted over her side of the phone.

"Hold on." She told me before she shouted, "Ma'an!"

There was silence for a little while. I was done bringing out all the pots and made my way to the room. I entered the room with the phone still on my ear and glanced at Kauna drawing in her diary on the floor. As I walked to my bed side drawer to check for something, Zainab came back on the phone.

"Miriam we'll continue our conversation another time." She said before complaining. "Mama Halimat wants me to go and wash her clothes and I already promised to meet up with Idris after this call."
