The pistol was reaching in the sky, and the starting sound was heard by everyone. This time Gaint didn't start too soon. Powerfully, he pressed his shoes to the ground and ran. The rivals at both sides also started their run so that all three of them were on the same level. The wind, which was blowing in his face, cooled his skin down. His arms were moving in sync with his muscular arms. Though he didn't want to look at the other boys and get distracted, he dared to take a glimpse to this right. Just a few meters behind him was the Milton-student. Melvin wasn't that easily lost and was steadily following Gaint.

The two boys were head to head while they were running towards the team members who would take over. However, Gaint was determined not to lose as he already failed miserably twice. The boy gathered his strength and increased his speed. About 100 meters were left between Gaint and the other runner. Out of the corner of his eyes Gaint saw that Melvin was right next to him and started to surpass him. The heavy breathing of his rival was close, but so was NAME, just about fifty meters.

For those last meters Gaint gathered all his strength and ran. NAME was preparing himself to be sent away by Gaint's palm on his back. Another fifteen meters and it would be over. The boy reached out his hand to be ready to give his team mate the signal to start running. It was on the last meters that the captain of St. Stephan's finally surpassed him and touched the back of his teammate. A few seconds later was his turn. Still in full speed, Gaint pushed NAME's back with his palm, and the other boy started to run. As he couldn't stop immediately, Gaint and Melvin still ran a few meters before they stopped desperate for air. The third runner from Milton sent his partner away.

Even though the run was far better than his first two failed attempts, Giant was sad about the fact that he wasn't able to beat Melvin and came second. However, the race wasn't over yet, but Gaint couldn't do anything else now. Together with the other athletes he stepped on the grass within the track and watched the others competing. The team of St. Stephan's kept leading the field, and the Gaint's friends were always close to surpassing but were never able to.

Flo finished his round, and, finally, it was their captain's turn. Sam was more than ready to start. The view in his eyes showed his fierce determination. The distance between him and the last runner of St. Stephan's. For the first hundred meters, Ben was just following, and then he started to attack. In total disbelief Gaint and the other guys saw Ben increasing his speed and slowly but steadily moving closer and closer to the runner in first place.

"Go, go", screamed his friends in support and hope that he will be able to win first place, "Come on! Come on!"

The unbelievable happened, and about four hundred meters before the finish line Ben took over the lead.

"Yeah! Yeah!" the boys screamed in excitement while Melvin couldn't believe what he saw and threw his hands in the air in disbelieve.

As soon as Sam passed the finish line and achieved the first place, the boys couldn't contain themselves anymore and ran towards their team captain. They all gathered together and cheered about their victory. The team jumped screamingly up and down. Melvin on the other hand joined his own team mates, who were absolutely disappointed. Although he tried to encourage them, they seem to really listen to him.

During their celebration Flo left the little circle and went over to the loser-team. The sitting boys looked at him.

"Guess from now on you won't have a big mouth anymore," he smiled mockingly whereas the St. Stephan's boys kept quiet and just stared angrily at him. He formed a big L with his right thumb and forefinger. "Loser!"

He returned to his team, and together they ran towards the cheering audience, raising their joined hand up in the high air. Their teachers and schoolmates were proud of the team. From the sideline Rome was applauding as well and looking at the sweaty face of Gaint. Seeing him so happy, made himself feel lucky.
