Obito was always recognized as 'the black sheep' of the family as he was the exact opposite to what „the perfect Uchiha" would be. His skin easily tanned, he liked light colours, he was emotional and clumsy. And to the worst of it, he showed absolutely no talent in any shinobi technique and never tried much to blend in.
Actually, some of his hated to Kakashi was jealousy because Obito's family sometimes teased him that "Kakashi is better Uchiha then he is".
More persecuting of his clan members were happy of his romantic feelings towards Kakashi only because it would grand them 'better' member of the family - some 'reward' for Obito's being. Also, it would mean to them that Obito wouldn't hand on his 'looser genes' further.
Obito later on proved them wrong in a greatly manner as he is considered to be one of the greatest shinobi Konoha ever had.
