Since Kakashi was still a child when Sakumo died, he was adopted by his distant blood relatives. However, they did it just to save him from orphanage and had no business in raising him. They were out of state all the time trusting Kakashi in his abilities and maturity. So he grew up alone and moved out as soon as it was possible because he couldn't stand how big and empty the house was.
After that, they never stayed in touch.
All that time, he never told anyone about either this or his parents death. Only Rin knew as she was his neighbor and Obito was devastated when he found out years later.
