I woke up at around 2 pm and bolted out of bed. I sighed when I realized that night wouldn't come for another few hours. My impatience got the best of me so I tried to distract myself with research. I pulled together everything I could find about vampires. I took notes and formed questions. My night would not go to waste with dumb questions.

I was eating around 4 pm when I got a call. "Val! Let's do something!" Jane said from the other end drunk already.

"I can't tonight Jane," I answered rolling my eyes. So she was going through a bad break up, but her drinking was really starting to get out of hand.

"Why not?! Are you skipping out on your best friend?" she said hiccuping.

"No, I just have prior engagements."

"If it's not a hulking sex god, I don't want to hear about it," she said slurring.

"Well not exactly."

"What?! Are you seeing someone?" she said surprised. That sobered her up a bit. "And you didn't tell me!

"I guess? We're just going to chat." I said as I finished eating.

"Well? Is he sexy?" She asked.

"I would say so."

"No, no. What does he look like?"

"Like trendy vampire fashion model." I chuckled.

"OOOh sounds mischievous!" She giggled.

"Jane, do me a favor will you?" I said seriously. She mumbled and okay and I proceded.  "I need you to go to your sister's house, yeah?" I paused to make sure she was still listening I heard an attentive "yeah" from the other line so I continued "And stay there."

"Nooooo. There's no booze there!" She pouted.

"Exactly! I fear for you." The last part I said seriously. Now that I knew about the existence of things such as vampires lurking the streets of San Fransisco, I added a new layer of danger to going out at night. Knowing Jane she would probably end up passed out God knows where to be found by the police in the morning. I could never forgive myself if she was found dead with her blood drained or something.

"Buzzkill." She said ending the phrase with a fart noise. "I have to go now."

"And where are you going, Jane?" I asked feeling like her mother.

"To my sister's house, because I'm grounded." She said in a Daffy-Duck-like voice. I laughed rolling my eyes. Of the pair, she was the serious one, but when she was drunk she was the silly one and I the serious one.

"Good! I'll see you later." I said hanging up.

After I tidied up my apartment, I took a shower and got ready. I was trying out clothes and couldn't decide what to wear. Ugh, what am I doing this isn't a date. It doesn't matter what you look like.

I saw the sun go down and my chest filled itself with anxiety. I looked back at my notes and my questions. This must have been what journalists felt before an interview. I understood journalists jobs had actual work to them but there was something about their line of work that made me uncomfortable. Oh, the irony.

The clock ticked by and with every passing second, I began to lose hope. Maybe he wasn't coming. He never said he would and only left me with a "perhaps". I sighed and further melted into my couch with my phone on my face playing dumb games and scrolling through Instagram. The kettle I'd placed on the stove began to whistle to warn me of is boiling water, but its sound didn't register to me that is until I heard the knock at the door. I bolted up and suddenly became very aware of the loud whistle. I ran to the kitchen to turn it off and then immediately opened the door.
