No one is perfect, no one knows the right things to say in every conversation. Think about that in real life.
I have awkward conversations sometimes. So do my friends. Sometimes someone cries and I don't really know what to do. There are going to be times like that with people.
Your character needs to not be perfect. That's what all characters need. It's just something that people can never live up to. It's unrealistic, and even if your story isn't non-fiction, most likely your character is a person like me and like you (assuming that you are a person... sorry).
