"Dunno," he said finally. "Never told me about it. Knowing him, some
kind of secret experiment weapon. He was always a show off. Always
enjoying the spotlight." he found the key he was looking for and
started walking to the door.
"No need," Gamma quickly said. "I'll get us out of here." she said
cockily. She focused on a space in the middle of the room. Everyone
watched for a minute, seeing what would happen. Nothing did.
"Well, that wasn't supposed to happen." Gamma said slightly embarrassed.
"I know," Miles said. " I created you and that drug. Didn't expect it
to be used on me, or hurt that much" he mumbled more to himself than
the Titans.
"Anyway the point is that drug will cloud the part of your
mind required to concentrate enough to use your powers."
"How long is it supposed to last?" Alpha asked.
"Well, it needs to work though your body, I wont bore you with the
details but it varies from person to person. For example it will take
longer for Alpha than for Gamma."
"And why would that be?!" Gamma said, her angry tone returning. Miles
looked in shock again, realizing his mistake.
"Uh, cause Alpha is a man and thus takes less concentration and more
of the drug," Miles lied quickly. Beta realized he was a quick liar.
She'd have to be careful about what she believes. Gamma however bought
it.
"I'll never understand this voodoo scientist stuff." Gamma eventually
said. Miles sighed, dodging another bullet.
"Well, let me try my way again," he said and pulled out a key and fit
it in the lock on the door. To their surprise, it opened and they all
ran out into the hall.
"I'm surprised your father let you keep those keys," Beta said as they
all trailed behind Miles, leading the way.
"I was a bit shocked myself," Miles admitted. "He must have just forgot
or was preoccupied."
They continued running, Miles leading the way through the dark, barely lit hallways. Without Beta's abilities returning, they had no idea where they were going, they just had to trust Miles.
Epsilon could feel the drug wearing off and before long he could turn parts of his body invisible. It started with just a finger but before long he could make his entire arm disappear.
Suddenly, Miles stopped and looked up. The Titans followed his gaze to see a figure standing there. It was too dark to see its face but they could tell it was very tall. It had long arms with claw like fingers. It could only be one person.
"Two-face?" Beta said. The figure came into the light and they recognized it as their two faced friend. He looked around confused.
"What's," Carl began.
"Going on?" Jeff finished.
"What happened to you guys?" Alpha asked.
"I don't remember," Jeff said.
"We just woke up." Carl added.
"And the place was like this." They concluded looking around confused as to why the building was destroyed.
"There was an explosion," Gamma started looking confused. "We thought you died."
"Well, I don't think were dead," Jeff said, feeling his face to make sure he was still alive.
"Are we?" Carl asked.
"No," Miles said. "And I'll make sure no one will die if you stick with me."
"Yes," Carl said.
"Sir," Jeff finished, with a mock salute. Miles nodded and then started walking past Jeff and Carl. Epsilon saw them flash a quick small smile and both the blue and green eye traveled to opposite far sides.
Jeff's arm suddenly shot out, fingers extended. Miles froze in mid step. Everyone stared in awe. Jeff's arm raised slowly in the air. Miles raised several feet into the air, his feet and arms waving around uselessly.
"Jeff!" Beta yelled out but it was too late. He closed his hand into a palm and brought in his hand. Miles collapsed to the ground in a heap.
"Miles," Epsilon said running to him. He placed two fingers on Miles neck. He couldn't feel a pulse.
"He's dead," Epsilon said softly.
"Humph, pathetic humans," Jeff said. "So weak. I didn't even break a sweat."
"Who are you?" Epsilon demanded, rounding on them. "How did you survive the explosion?"
"You mean," Carl started.
"You haven't figured it out?" Jeff finished.
"You're almost as dumb as the humans," Carl added. They all stood there for a second before Beta's eyes grew wide.
"According to Greek mythology, there is only one creature that can withstand an explosion like that and arise from the ashes," She paused for a second then continued. "You're Project Phoenix."
The team all turned, the startling revelation making sense. Jeff and Carl bowed theatrically.
"Pleasure to finally make your acquaintance," they said together. No one else moved. Epsilon stood up and held out his arms, with the blade outstretched, in a fighting stance.
"Yes," Jeff said.
"We are," Carl added.
"Project Phoenix," Jeff finished.
"Anyone surprised?" They both said at the same time. Gamma raised her hand but Alpha swatted it down.
"What?" Gamma protested. "I'm not going to lie. I did not see that coming."
"You'd better start talking," Epsilon said, pointing a wrist blade at them. "Or things could get really ugly for you."
"Whoa," Jeff said, holding up his arms in clear surrender. "Don't get us wrong, we don't want to fight you."
"On the contrary," Carl added. "We want you to join us."
"Join you?" Beta asked. "Join you in what?"
"Our quest," Jeff replied.
"Mission" Carl added
"Call it what you like." Jeff said.
"And what is your mission?" Alpha asked.
"Destruction of the Human Race." They both said with a small almost evil grin.
