"It's about Liv." I said as I sat on the only chair in the room.

"I figured as much."

"I need you to tell me..." I started saying quickly, my voice too loud. "Okay," I started again, "I need you to tell me about Liv. What was she like in college? Is there anything that... happened that made her... I don't know..."

"Oh Neymar..." Marina said, a sad expression on her face. "You have to talk to Liv, this isn't right."

"I know! I know! Believe me! But she... well she doesn't want to tell me and not just me, anyone... I can't help her if I don't know."

"You can only help people that want to be helped." Marina said wistfully and something Liv had said about her passed through my mind. "Besides, I don't know if I have anything to tell you. Liv has always been a riddle..."

"But you were friends in college!"

"Actually we weren't that close. She... I don't think she was close with anyone. Except the people back home, Sam, her brother's friends."

"So what, other than Sam, Liv had no friends? That can't be. People like her. She's friendly with everyone here!"

"She kept to herself a lot. If you knew her back then you'd think she did a 180o when she came here. She transformed herself."

"That's what you think?" I asked incredulously.

"Like I said I didn't know her that well. But I do now and maybe she doesn't let people in easy, but when she does she lets you know the real her. I don't know Neymar. We're speculating. Only Liv can answer those questions..."

"But she doesn't want to." I said.

"Alex was always friendly with her in college." Marina suggested. "Maybe he..."

"Friendly?"

"Well he was a popular guy. Lots of girls liked him. But he had a crush on her for years."

"Thanks Marina." I said, standing up. There was no way in hell I would talk to Alex about Liv. "And... can we keep this between us?" I asked her as I walked towards the door.

"Sure." Marina said, giving me a small smile. I wondered what she really thought about all this.

~*~

The soft bass of one of Liv's favorite songs woke me up in the morning. It was the sound I had chosen for her calls and as I grabbed the phone from my nightstand I felt the same impatience to hear her voice I always did.

"Hey." She said and it sounded like she was whispering.

"Hi." I said, sitting up in the bed, suddenly wide awake. It had been less than 24 hours since I saw her, but I missed her already.

"I... I just wanted to say good luck for today." She said. "I didn't want you to go out there without me having said it."

"Are you coming to the game?" I asked her.

"Yeah. I mean, if it's okay with you."

"Why wouldn't it be Liv? I love you." I said before I could control my tongue. I had tried and spectacularly failed at being reserved when it came to her since I first met her. Why would today be any different?

I heard her taking a long breath and then I heard a knock on my door.

"Liv someone is here and... well it looks like you aren't going to say anything." I said as I walked to the door. "I guess, enjoy the game."

When I opened the door I came face to face with her. She was crying, something I hadn't picked up in her voice over the phone.

"You're here." I stepped aside for her to get inside but she didn't move. "You can't stay there, you'll be seen." I told her and she finally got inside. She wiped the tears from her eyes and turned around to look at me. "Liv say something."

"I love you too."

"Well... good." I said suddenly feeling relieved and light as a feather. "Stop it with all—"

"But—"

"But? Are you breaking up with me?"

"No. But you will."

"What are you talking about?"

"I'll tell you. Everything."

"Okay." Was all I could manage to say. For a second I thought about telling her not to tell me anything. To let me go and play the game and tell me afterwards. But that would be worse, I wouldn't be able to focus, wondering what she wanted to say to me.

She took a deep breath. "There was someone else. Before you."

"Is that all? We all have history, I never thought you didn't. It's over now." I said, my voice coming out erratically.

She just stood there looking at me, new tears staining her cheeks.

"It's over now, right Liv?" I said again, chuckling at the stupidity of all this. Why are we talking about some ex, about what happened a long time ago? There's no point. "Liv?" I asked again.

She pursed her lips together, as if she tried to hold everything inside. Her eyes were red and glistening and she wrapped her hands around herself as if she would crumple without the support. Realization finally hit me.

"Is it over?" I asked and it wasn't a rhetoric question anymore.

Her lips finally parted. "No."
