May POV {14 years ago}

It's mid November now. It feels weird being 6.

Over the last few months Daddy has been acting weird towards me, and I don't know why.

He's in the dining room typing away as usual and his eyebrows are knotted together in concentration.

"Dad can I ask you something?" I ask as I stand beside him.

"Sure." He huffs.

"Can we go to the Daddy daughter dance on Saturday?"

"I'm busy Saturday." He answers flatly.

"But it's around night time."

"I'm busy all day." His fingers type quickly. I gulp.

"You took Sadie and Ellie to their Daddy daughter dance." I remind him. "Why can't we go?"

"Because I'm busy." I frown.

"Please?" I ask. "Everyone in my school is going."

"Well, their Dad's aren't busy." I slide my hand off the table. He huffs. "I'll think about it, okay?"

"Really?" Little excitement rises in me.

"Yeah."

"Can you let me know soon though. I have to get a dress if we're going."

"Uhuh." He continues typing.

It's Monday now and the dance is Saturday. He has time to let me know.

*Wednesday*

"May?" I hear my Fathers voice call from the hallway. I pause the TV and walk over to where he is.

"Yes?" I ask.

"Did you want to go buy your dress now?" His  voice seems annoyed almost making my heart pinch. I ignore that though and feel a smile creep into my lips. I just nod.

He walks out the front door and I follow behind him.

He doesn't help me buckle into my seat, he just gets into the drivers side and turns on the car.

We sit in silence as he drives.

*Saturday Night*

I stand in front of my body length mirror and flatten my dress. I've never wore a dress before but I like mine. I feel like a princess.

I look at the clock and it's 6:30. The dance starts now. He'll be home soon though.

I sit at the end of my bed and dangle my feet off the edge. My hands rest on my lap and I take a deep breath. Being a few minutes late won't matter. We have 2 hours until it's over.

~

After time my smile fades and a frown forms. I look at the clock and it's 8:30. The dance just ended.

Tears sting my eyes as I tug off my stupid dress and throw it in my closet. I put on my regular clothes and feel tears roll down my cheeks.

For once I just wanted to feel like Sadie and Ellie who wear dresses and feel like girly girls. For once I just wanted to feel pretty.

He promised me he'd take me and show up on time.

I look out my window and see his car pull in. He helps Sadie out the back seat making me cry more. They both smile widely as walking up the house.
