the muscular boy is beside me again.

rain is pounding the school bus windows

and thunder booms in the distance.

"you're so fat," he says. "i can barely fit on this bench with you."

suddenly the doors of the bus screech open

and an ebony-haired boy appears in the opening.

he's staring at me

and somehow

the gravity tugging on me

becomes a little lighter.

"leave. me. alone," i growl.

i see phil smile

as the pierced boy splutters.

"go," i say again.

he scowls at me once more

before yanking himself off the seat,

muttering more venomous words.

i lock eyes with phil,

and we share a smile.
