The Hit

Prologue

Mark strocked his dirty clumped up brown hair. It had gotten longer. His eyes sunken into deep, dark sockets of self pity. That was all he could feel now, pity. Pity for the man he once was, pity for the girl sleeping on the couch next to him, pity for them both. His rough hand, slowly slid over from his leg, to the woman's blond locks, gently stroking them with an emotion he could feel only sometimes, and only for her. Her hair felt like a dead animal's fur, tangled in a dirty mess. 

"I should have never dragged you into this Sadie.."He muttered longingly. His mouth was dry, and his breath reeked of bourbon and cigarettes. 

The two things he was most afraid of getting addicted to, but he did..and it felt great.
He was weak, unable even to handle the sight of his beloved, curled up in a ball on that dirty couch, in those raggidy cloths. She was supposed to wear clean cloths, smell like perfume and sleep in her own bed, in her own home. But instead... She smelled of cigarettes, alcohol, she looked as if she had been dragged in the dirt by a truck for hours. The blood stains on her cloths might be washed out, but the blood on her hands may never fade. 

"I'm sorry.."Was all he could mutter out, before a cough so brutal almost ripped his lungs out.

"You should stop smoking." The gentle voice of Sadie, stuck him.
With her dirty hand she reached over to the small coffee table, grabbing the pack of cigarettes. With a match she lighted her cigarette taking a long puff from it before exhaling the gray cloud of smoke against the TV.

"I do what I want."He spoke, lighting himself another.

"Whatever."Sadie said quietly as she straightened her body from her laying position.

Both of them didn't speak a word to eachother, blankly staring at the muted television, pretending they were watching it just so they didn't have to look at eachother.
The room was cold. It was dark. They were silent.
Mark's phone rang. They both knew what that ment.
