Chapter Six
Dean's POV
I woke to the sound of birds chirping. The air was moist like it rained not long ago. Aubrey was still asleep in my arms and I leaned back to look at her face. She looked so peaceful. And beautiful of course. I brushed a piece of hair away from her face and gently unwrapped my arms from her waist. I stood and made my way over to the balcony.
I was right about the rain. Everything was freshly wet and looking up at the gray overcast sky, it surely isn't letting up today.
It feels like a dream. Beautiful in the fact that this island is gorgeous and I'm here with Aubrey. Also a nightmare though because of the fact that I don't know what this place holds. I need to keep her safe and that's hard to do when you have no idea what to expect. I hear Aubrey stirring now.
Aubrey's POV
I awoke to find that Dean wasn't here. Startled I quickly sat up and saw he was out on the balcony looking at me with a small smile.
"Sleep well?" He asked.
"Uh...yeah, I did actually." I wasn't going to admit that this was mostly because he was my safe haven.
"Oh, it's raining," he points out at the jungle, "we are kinda stuck here for the day. If you don't mind.." Dean said.
"No it's good, I haven't had a rainy day in a while." I said smiling. Dean came and sat beside me on the bed.
"So, what do you want to do then?" He asked studying my face.
"Well, I am hungry..." I trailed on giggling. Dean handed me my bag.
"Thanks."
I pulled out our brunch (since I have no clue what time it is). We ate the trail mix I had left in my bag.
While eating, I realized this boy is a mystery to me. I'm still curious as to who the real Dean Zuko is.
"Tell me, who is Dean Zuko?" I said smirking.
He laughed, "I'm not sure, I think he goes to our school."
"Seriously though...." I said. He stays silent and stares straight ahead.
"He's none of your concern."
"Why won't you just open up for once? I know you're a great guy under there and nothing you can say to me will make me think otherwise..........you know, we could possibly be stuck here for the rest of our lives. I would like to at least know who I'm living with." I take deep breaths. I shouldn't have snapped like that but I wanted some answers.
"I'm Dean Zuko, my favorite color is orange, and I'm just messed up." He says putting his head in his hands.
"Hey, you are not the only messed up one. In reality, everyone is a little messed up." I put a hand on his knee.
"I'm Aubrey Hollingway, my favorite color is blue and I'm messed up too." I said. When he stays quiet, I continue.
"I'm a only child to my parents Dave and Ashley-"
"Wait, they are your parents?!" He asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"I bet life sucks when you are practically bathing in money." He sneers.
"It does actually.....I'm expected to live up to all these standards and live the life that my parents want me to, not what I want to.....the perfect goody-two shoes who goes to Harvard, becomes a lawyer like mom, then gets married and has 3 kids."
Dean laughs, "That honestly does sound awful. And I could never see you being a lawyer, let alone a lawyer with 3 kids."
"Me neither, it's just not who I am you know."
A few minutes go by in silence.
"I'm an orphan." Dean says quietly.
"Oh! I'm so sorry I just-"
"No you're fine, um, well my current foster parents are Ray & Chloe McMann and let's just say that I do anything I can do stay away from that place..."
"Don't they worry where you are?" I ask.
"Not at all. They hate my guts.....anytime I see them, they are either drunk or high. One night, I snuck in late because I was working late and I remember Jack stumbled out of their room into the kitchen....he was drinking and he started shouting at me about being such a screw up. Before I knew it, he smashed bottle of beer he was holding against the back of head and starting beating me with a bat."
I was speechless. I remember when Dean showed up to school with bruises all over his arms and a bandage on the back of his neck. I was sitting next to him in class and saw the bruises. He quickly noticed me looking and pulled his sleeve down. I was the only one that saw them and it changed how I looked at him that day.
"I'm so sorry Dean. Here I am complaining about being a lawyer and......isn't there something you could do? Like couldn't you go to children's services?" I ask.
"I can't, there's no point really. I'm going to be 18 in 9 months. I could escape from them then. Actually I escaped early and crazily not on purpose." He shrugged. I took his hand in mine.
"I glad you did, escape I mean, and I'm here for you. I really care about you and ,Dean, you're one of the greatest guys I've ever met. I know that my problems were puny compared to yours-"
"No ones problems are too small, like you said, everybody's messed up. And thanks...I really appreciate it." Dean said smiling. He squeezed my hand and his eyes bore into mine.
Dean's POV
This girl though. She drives me crazy in the good sense. I'm falling in deep but I'm not making no intention to stop myself. How could she care for someone like me, I don't know. I do know that I just confessed my deepest darkest secret to this girl and she didn't turn away or treat me differently.
I stared into her eyes and started to lean in........
