Be different, be different not because the world says different is good, rather be different because the world can't predict or understand you and therefore can not even succeed in manipulating you. Be different because the world will not know what to expect from you.
The world that we live in has a one track mind, fame, success, money, and power are what motivates people. In a world like this, it easy for one to become a prisoner of their desires as the puppeteer dangles the carrot in front of his puppets. Being different in this homogenous society provides one with security, security of free thought and action.
When one is not controlled by his desires or when one's desires are not known to the world, that individual achieves freedom in the truest sense of this world.
