Heaven’s Peal, an Elegy

c. 2010 Olan L. Smith

---

To speak to thee this day, ‘tis heartening

Knowing thou art listening

And mindful thy pain shall soon slip away.

Thou endureth all things of thine existence

Either today or tomorrow

Yea, hundreds of tomorrows—

Whatsoever God wills we abide.

---

Struggle with all thy might,

Live each day knowing life is merely a mist

A whimpering nighttime breeze

That hath a hollow tone,

A note whose pitch is merciless

And whose harmony rings untrue,

Till God doth tune its pipe.

---

Precious Lord before death’s door didst thou say?

Father—if

Thou art willing remove thou this cup?

Fair enough ― thy will is done.

Oh, ’Tis anguish to recognize

Thine own coming demise.

---

Ah, sweet sorrow bid thine discernment,

Must thou expire to comprehend, nearby rests more?
