Our Selfish Eyes

Blink once
And see your life rotate, shudder and stabilize
Behind your carefully closed eyes.
Edges barely ripped and the fabric of the sky
Worn, weary, and shy.
Grass dried up and turning to powder
Distant screaming that won't get louder
Chaos strikes but we bear it
We live on in honor of those who are gone
We cherish, we move and repair it.

Blink twice
And see the planet break in half
Magma rumbling, structures tumbling
Everything falling down.
Space full of shards of ruby and brown
Hard work strewn across indigo planes
Everyone reduced to crystals and grains
The belongings of our kind all aflame
And since you were blinking,
You're the one to blame.

Blink three times
And pull the entire system apart
Forget arms, legs, and brains and hearts.
The framework that allowed things to stay the same
Has been tattered beyond thinking
All because you were blinking.
Creation lies in fragments at your feet
Yes, we are sinking
Into an end of possibility
It's the death of all fragility
And it's completely our fault.
Yes, it's you and I who take the blame
Because we didn't stay awake
Because we closed our selfish eyes.
