Apologies

Too often we apologize
for things beyond our control,
for things that simply happen
as we fill our daily roles.

Things that had to happen,
things that couldn't be stopped,
times when everything happens
when a certain ball is dropped.

We are sorry for your loss
of whoever died that day.
It could not have been our fault,
but we are sorry anyway.

We are sorry for the wait
you surely knew was near,
that happens nearly every time
that you have ever come here.

We are sorry for the little things
that really do not matter,
we are sorry for bigger things
That matter more than the latter.

We apologize for things
that were surely not our fault,
expressing our condolences
when a dog decides to bolt.

It's for the sake of our emotions,
and I guess it helps a bit,
but do we need these motions
when you really think about it?

It hardly makes a difference
in the long run of our lives.
Why do we always do this?
Do we really need to apologize?

Why do we do this?
It shows we regret
when another's expectations
just haven't been met.

We do this because,
if you were in a rush,
that line really was long,
now you might have to push.

We do this because
it might ease the pain
of a breakup quite rough
or basketball to the brain.

We do this because
it helps us feel better.
Caring does truly help
when cheeks can't get wetter.

We do this because
it shows that we care.
It shows that your friends
will always be there.

We do this because,
When sobs fill the air,
we regret that, for you,
we could not have been there.
