Not very soon after Nathalie had left, the lights flicked off.
"Who's there?" I called, getting a hold of myself. Whoever that was shouldn't notice my voice crack.
No one answered.
I tried to call out through the intercom. It was out of reach. My heart hammered against my chest. I shouted as if someone might hear me. "Nurse! Anybody! Help!"
My breathing stopped as I heard footsteps closing in on me, rapping against the floor heavily.
I had questions. But I didn't voice them out. I choked them back, forming a lump in my throat. I tried to calm myself by thinking that Nathalie will be here soon. I hoped.
"Who's there?" I asked weakly when I finally managed to get my voice. Still, no one answered.
All of a sudden, a hand covered my mouth. I tried to remove it with my free hand. But it was no use. Soon, the hand was replaced by a cloth, muffling my screams.
I felt hopeless. What could a teenager with an immobilized arm and leg do?
Tears trickled down my cheeks. I can't die like this.
I kicked with my right leg. Still useless. I was just kicking air. A fiendish chuckle rang, sending shivers down my spine.
My eyes had adjusted from the dark; my head still throbbing like crazy. Everything was still unrecognizable.
In just a split second, the same glove-covered hand grabbed my arm. I tried to get freed from its hold but it was too powerful for me.
Suddenly, a sharp thing traced the length of my palm, digging my flesh. It was extremely painful. I screamed but nothing came out.
Hot liquid gently flowed down my palms. I shut my eyes as if it would lessen the pain. It didn't.
A moment later, something hit my head and everything went blank.
