Runaway

Chapter 1

It was a late summer night and for once the city seemed silent. Or at least it did from Riley Matthews bay window. She was talking to a certain boy genius who hadn't left yet. He had been here almost all day due to the break up from his girlfriend of almost 3 years. Smackle, his ex, had broken up with him so she could go to Gatten. She had interviewed for an early acceptance program without telling him and had gotten in. He showed up as a mess, blubbering and barely making any sense. Riley had been comforting him all day and hadn't had time to text Maya even. Finally her phone buzzed and she looked over at it.
"You should get that." He said. She stood up and grabbed the phone. It was from Katy Hart, Maya's mom.
"Hello Katy what's up?" Riley said cheerfully even though she was dreadfully tired, and wondering why her friends mother would call her this late, it was almost 3 am.
"Have you heard from Maya?" She asked quickly and a little more nervous than what Riley liked.
"No ma'am why?"
"Do you think Farkle has or Lucas or even Zay?" She asked again.
"Farkle has been with me all day and I don't know if she talked to them today. What's going on on?"
"Well. She left her phone here and we haven't seen her all day. Some of her clothes are gone as well. I'm getting ready to contact the police now Riley, I'll tell you if we find anything."
"Alright thank you." Riley said with her voice cracking.
"Riley what's going on?" Farkle said standing in front of her. As a response she flung herself on him and cried.
"Maya's missing!" She wailed. Topanga and Cory appeared in the doorway due to her noise and looked at Farkle confused.
"Maya is missing." He said.
"What?!" Topanga gasped. Cory ran out of the room and put on his jacket.
"I'm going to talk to Shawn and Katy. I'll be back soon." He said as he kissed his wife.
"I'll handle this." Farkle said to Topanga and she disappeared from the doorway.
"Shh. Shh it's all gonna be okay." He cooed. She sniffles slightly and looked up at him. He had grown in his years and was now a good amount taller than her. He picked her up and laid her on her bed. He tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled at her.
"They'll find Maya. I'm sure of it." He said. He squeezed her hand and got ready to leave. But her grip remained and she pulled him back down beside her.
"Don't leave me I can't be alone right now." She whispered. He nodded his head and walked to the other side of the bed. He laid down and got under the sheets as he hummed one of Rileys Favorite songs. They slowly drifted to sleep but their hands never parted from each other. In the morning Farkle got up before Riley. He decided to talk to Topanga about the whole thing before telling Riley anything. There in the living room was Topanga. She looked like a mess, she had bags under her eyes and she was half asleep.
"Topanga?" Farkle said.
"Yes Farkle?" She asked sweetly.
"What happened?" He asked sitting beside her.
"Well we all have to go to the police station today and talk to them about Maya. I'm just waiting for Riley."
"I'll get her. Did they find anything?" He asked.
"They haven't really started to look yet. They think she was a runaway but I wouldn't understand why. She's a good kid." It sounded like she was almost telling herself that.
"I know." He stated. He got up and walked back to where Riley was sleeping peacefully. He slipped in beside her and she adjusted her body to lay over him. He played with a lock of her hair as small wheezes of air came from her. After a bit she started to wake up.
"Morning." She said.
"Good morning."
"Did they find her?" She asked not moving. But enjoying the warmth and smell of the body beside her.
"No, I'm afraid they didn't." He responded.
"Oh." Was all she could think of. Every word she had ever known seemed to leave her at that moment.
"We have to talk to the police about her today." He said.
"Well then I suppose I should get ready." She said. Sliding away from the warmth and comfort of the boy. She dug through her closet but nothing was what she wanted. She finally came out with just some jeans and one of Farkle's t-shirts on.
"That's my shirt." He said chuckling, trying to do anything to bring back Riley Matthews Smile.
"Sorry." She said.
"No it's fine." He smiled.
"Alright, let's go." Topanga said. They got into Topangas car and drove to the police station. Riley laid over Farkle the whole time as he ran his fingers through her hair. Nobody wanted them to drive in this state so Topanga was driving the two of them.
When they got to the police station Zay was sitting in the chairs and hugged them as they showed up. Zays parents weren't in town and they all only had their permit except for Lucas, so he rode with Lucas. Lucas had just been taken back for questioning, but the police wanted to call it checking all their sources. We called it eliminating suspects.
"So Mr.Friar when was the last time you saw Maya Hart?" The man asked him. Lucas fiddled with his thumbs as he though of his answer.
"Last night, it was probably around 10 to 10:30 because I saw her on my way home from work. I get off at 10."
"Alright explain it to us." The officer said.
Flashback
Lucas was coming home from his job at the auto body shop when he saw Maya walking down the road.
"Hey clutter-bucket where ya going?" He asked with his southern accent dripping from his words. She froze slightly and looked up at the truck.
"To Rileys." She answered.
"Alright hop in I'll drive ya." He said. She sighed, If she didn't go with him he'd be suspicious so she lugged herself in to the passengers seat.
"What's up Maya?" He asked trying to make casual conversation.
"Nothing much how about you Ranger Rick?"
"Just headed home from work." He said. She began to flip through his stations on the radio.
"Nothing but country Huckleberry. How do you expect me to take you seriously?" She chuckled.
"Ahh come on, you can take it out on me but not on country." He said laughing. They finally pulled up to Rileys and he smiled.
"I'll see you later short stack." He smiled.
"Yeah later." She sighed. She opened the door before turning around and looking at him. She then flung herself over the console and kissed him. He was shocked but kissed back. She pulled the door closed and he lifted her over the console and onto his lap. It was a passionate steamy makeout session with Maya hart, for Lucas that was crazy and very unexpected since they had all agreed to just be friends. But finally after 15 minutes of making out she pulled away.
"I have to go." She said. As she ran her hands through her hair.
"Bye." He responded breathlessly. She kissed him on the cheek and whispered in to his ear.
"No matter what happens remember this." She said as she patted his leg and jumped out of the car. He then shut the car door and drove away contemplating what had just happened.
End of flashback.
The cop had just noticed the fading hickey on Lucas's neck peeking out from his blue sweatshirt.
"Alright. I believe you son and don't worry we will find your friend." He said as he dismissed Lucas. He walked out and pulled Zay in next.
"When was the last time you saw Maya?" He asked.
"Well I think it was the day before yesterday. The whole gang was at Topanagas." Zay answered.
"Do you have an alibi from 10:30 to midnight?"
"I was watching my little sister and we stayed up to watch a scary movie if that counts." Zay said.
"Alright your dismissed." He walked in and took farkle.
"When was the last time you saw Maya Hart?"
"The day before yesterday the whole gang was at Topangas ." He replied.
"Do you have an alibi?" He asked.
"I was with Riley from 10 to 3 am the next morning."
"Alright then." He walked out once more and got Riley. He noticed her as the most torn up and brought one of the female deputies to question her.
"Hi my name is Juliet. I'm going to ask you a few questions alright?" She said sweetly. Riley nodded her head and looked down.
"When did you last see Maya hart?" She asked.
"The day before yesterday evening. She was hanging out with me until she left at about 9." Riley said stiffly.
"Alright can you tell us where you were yesterday?" She said.
"With Farkle. He had just been through a break up and needed a little help."
"What time did he arrive?" She asked.
"About 10. He slept over." Riley concluded.
"Alright that's all we need for now." She smiled at Riley.
