Chapter Twelve

I feel someone shaking my shoulder violently.

I bolt up and look next to my bed.

Fred is there, fully dressed with terrified eyes and his hand is still on my shoulder.

-"El thank god you're awake" He says only slightly above a whisper "My foster mom knows we're here, We have to go, now!".

I feel panic flow through my body.

-"Okay, We'll go get Gabby and Buddy" I respond at the same volume.

I throw on everyday clothes and we both jump out the window.

We land on our feet and run to Fred's house.

Fred throws his anti depressants, his camera, his wallet, his computer and some clothes in a backpack.

He picks up Buddy's bed while buddy is asleep in it.

We jump out his window and into his truck, placing Buddy in the back seat.

We drive to Gabby's house and knock on her window, Fred stays in the car, it's easier because her house is a one story house.

I see Gabby pull back the curtains.

She looks at me, surprised and opens the window.

She is in her pajamas of course because it is about 4:00 am.

-"Elliot?" She asks sleepily "What are you doing here?".

-"Fred's foster mom is after us so we're going away, far away" I say "We want you to come with us".

-"Elliot I-" She starts to say.

-"It's okay, I know" I respond walking towards the window.

Before I can jump out she places her hand on my shoulder.

I turn around and look at her, confused.

-"I was going to say, I'm coming with you" She says with a smile "Give me a minute to pack".

She grabs her backpack, throwing school stuff out of it and shoving clothes into it.

-"Wait what?" I question "What about your friends?".

-"They betrayed me, I don't want to elaborate" She answers "Plus, what would I do without my best friend?".

I smile brightly.

She finishes packing and swings her backpack over her shoulder.

-"Mom and Dad will take care of the cat" She says, hopping out the window.

We both get into Fred's car, me in the passenger's seat and Gabby in the back seat with the dog.

We start driving.

Three weeks laterWe stop at an old coffee shop.

-"You coming in, El?" Fred asks, a lit cigarette in his mouth.

He's wearing sunglasses and a beanie that completely covers his hair.

His earrings are out and as is his lip ring.

He still looks handsome.

Gabby is wearing normal clothes and sunglasses as well.

I see a paper hammered into a tree and look at it.

-"Elliot?" Gabby questions.

I tear the paper from the tree and look at it:

Three teens missing from Rockville, Maryland.

It then shows our pictures.

I crumple up the paper and throw it on the ground, stamping it on the ground.

-"Coming" I respond.
