I walked to my flat to find a snoozing Dan curled on the couch. I scanned at her fetal positioned body. I rummaged my kitchen and brought back a plate of sweet break and hot chocolate. I tear bits of the bread and dunk it into my chocolate and chew it up. A groggy Dan strolled in, “Hey smells good.”
“It’s bread and chocolate?” I narrow my eyes at her. She checks the fridge and I hear the clinking of glass and metal as she rearranges things in my fridge.
She comes back with the same thing as me and sits across from me on the island. “So who’s Louis?”
“None of your business.”
She leaned back and twirled in her metal chair with a chunk of sweet bread balanced between her fingertips. “C’mon don’t be such an uptight bitch.”
I stuffed my face with even more bread. “Come one just tell me Jaime.” She pouted childishly like when we were little, before it happened.
“He’s a friend.”
She cocked her eyebrow, “Then why don’t your other friends send you these cute postcards and make you swans from gum wrapper?”
I turned to look at her, “Because th-wait you went through my things?” I groaned and got up. I strolled to my room and looked around and of course my postcards were all over the place and the bag of swans were on my armoire.
“DAMN IT DAN!”
She giggled and a blonde ringlet fell across her heart shaped face. “You haven’t called me Dan in so long.” Her face it eased up and it seemed brighter and softer somehow. My shoulders slumped down as I picked up the cards, “There’s a reason for that.” A light hearted chuckle escaped me. Dan was soon at my side as she helped organize. She spoke quietly and softly, “I’m sorry Jam, I didn’t mean to. It just happens I’m a nosy person.”
Jam? Wow how long has it really been? God I need to keep up with my calendar. I tuck a piece of straying hair behind my ear, “It’s okay I guess I really am an uptight bitch.”
We share a loud booming laugh. Once we cleaned up we sat on our bed. She hands me a stack of pounds, “For the rent.” She explains before picking at the stitching of my comforter.
I fiddled with my fingers nervously, “Louis is my first love.” I admit to no one in particular despite the fact that she is the only one with me. Her face brightens with a dazzling smile. She then proceeds to bombard me with millions of questions like: If I get lost in his eyes? Do I see myself with him for the rest of my life? What’s he like in bed?
Which I dutifully answered: Yes. Not really maybe I don’t know, and amazing. She sits giddily in the middle of the bed. Her lips moving to the speed of light as more questions pile out. Finally she calms down and softly asks, “When am I going to meet him!”
My heart sinks and it becomes hard to swallow, “I don’t know. I uh think we’re done.”
I then begin to elaborate everything that has happened up until she showed up. She placed her hands to her chest in an overly dramatic fashion, “Oh you poor dear!” she pulls me in and apologizes for being so rude about things. I forgive her and we begin to get much more into detail about the matter.
“Wait so you met through El when they were dating then they broke up and you became fuck buddies and somewhere along the way you fell in love with him?” I nodded and she processed it and continued, “And so now he’s back with El and now you’re using his best friend to get back at him? Yeah this is bound to end great.” She snapped sarcastically as she picked at her electric blue gel nails. I fling my pillow at her and send her sprawling back.
“Look I know it’s terrible, but it wasn’t how I intended it to go.”
She resumed at picking her nails, “You know no one ever plans this, but Louis really? He’s not even the cute one!” She giggled shrilly and I flipped her off. I haven’t felt this close to her in a while and for the first time since her arrival I’m thinking this might work out pretty well.
