"dan," his dad said.
it had to have been the fifth time his brain had played this trick.
and dan knew it was a trick-that his dad wasn't really there.
but in a way that only made it more terrifying.
to know that your mind is against you.
conjuring up your worst fears, making you doubt your sanity.
making you question what was real and what was an illusion.
because dan was starting to wonder.
"dan," the man said again.
"yes?" dan whispered and he instantly regretted it.
don't talk to it, don't encourage it, it's not real it's not real.
"did you miss me?" and he smiled sharply.
he looked like the devil as he fell from heaven.
dan trembled.
it's not real it's not real.
"you need to go," dan found himself saying, "you don't have power over me."
his dad threw back his head and laughed.
when he looked back at dan, the mans eyes were blazing.
he reached out a hand, coming closer and closer to dan.
"i will always have power over you," his said with a voice like death.
and he vanished right before his hand would've touched dan's cheek.
