 ANNIKA HAYDEN WAS AN ANGEL

ANNIKA HAYDEN WAS AN ANGEL. Not literally, of course — that would have been foolish to think — but one could have been mistaken. Perhaps she looked like the opposite, a devil in disguise, with her dark eyes, tempting little smiles, and sinfully long legs, but the truth was, she had always been caring and quiet, formed of sheer obedience and kindness. She was blessed with great courage when the situation so demanded, and no matter what, she would always stand up for her friends and the children she taught for a living, but most of all, she was what people tended to refer to as an angel. That wasn't to say it was always with the best intentions, or that she always loved to hear the word, but even with all the secrets and sins out in the world that she avoided as well as possible, she was good.

Which was exactly why it was rather odd for her to end up inside a club of temptation and passion on an ordinary Thursday evening, but after what was yet to be a complete week of hard work, she could rely on Maeve Reilly to deliver a way to unwind. Both of the women were teachers at a local school, Annika's specialty being languages while Maeve leaned towards maths and science, but regardless of the professional image the latter sometimes put up at work, she certainly had another side to her. She was alone in that, as Annika always maintained the same routines, the same cheerful smile on her lips and the same integrity fueling her soul.

She guessed that at least a fraction of that was going to dismantle as soon as they approached a club she had never heard of before, but Maeve had mentioned enough times for her to remember as Lux.

"Oh, this will be fun, Annie. You just have to go with the flow", was Maeve's word of advice as they were let into the club, past the velvet rope and sucked into the crowd of people marching to the beat of the music. Although Annika doubted her ability to do as had been proposed, she gave Maeve an agreeing nod, making a promise she was going to try living up to.

Fiddling with the sleeves of her dress, Annika eyed the surroundings with suspicion and uncertainty. She wasn't of the insecure sort, but she was positively out of her element, leaving her with a frown distorting her painted face as she stood amidst the drunken people. Maeve had sneakily pointed out how she had pulled a few strings to get them into the exclusive club without waiting until ungodly hours for entrance, and doubtful that she even wanted to know what those strings entailed, Annika couldn't help but huff heavily into the sweaty air. The sophisticated decorating of the place balanced the scales between filthy and impressive, but the booming music left Annika with a dizzy head as she descended the grand stairwell with Maeve's hand clasped with her own.

Within seconds, Maeve was yelling something over the music, following along the lines of a promise to be back soon but Annika wasn't holding her breath. As much as she loved her friend, she knew how well the rowdy brunette blended in clubs like these, and no doubt, she'd get caught up in the dancing and drinking sooner than anticipated. Just like that, the Reilly was lost to the crowd of enthusiastic clubbers and Annika was left alone standing by the stairwell with a shy smile at anyone who glanced her way.

The exit was nowhere to be found and Annika was abandoned with no other option but to stay true to her promise — to try and have fun, so with an awkward sway, she began tiptoeing further into the club only for a few loud individuals to bump into her in the process. She was far too soft and exemplary to take part in the grinding on the floor or let anyone down a shot off of her body, not to mention making out under the neon lights controlling the room. She felt lost, and at that moment, she could only think back to her rescue kitten whom she had found from a box on the side of the street a few months ago. If only someone could save her, now.

And yet, despite being like a fish out of water, she wound up catching someone's eye. The eye of the only one who mattered, really.
