Chapter 20

“You found it? Where is it? How did you find it?”

“Before I tell you, I need you to promise me something.”

“What?”

“That you would wait for your brother before you go off and find your mother.”

“But what if he takes weeks to make contact, what if while waiting for him, something happens to her, what if-“

“Promise me Emmaline, or I won’t breathe a word of what I’ve learned.”

“But-“

“No but’s make this promise or wait till your brother’s here.”

I stared at her in disbelief and realized that she was dead serious, she would make me wait till my brother was here. I couldn’t, the need to find her, to find out where she was being held, was overwhelming, I needed to know, I needed to know if she was alive, if she was close by. Waiting for Jake could mean putting her in more danger, but I could understand why Kayla hesitated, she was worried for my safety and she believed that Jake would keep me safe. Yet I knew that I could protect myself, I have been doing it for the last five years, but if this is what she needed for her to tell me, then so be it. I would wait for my brother before I set out to rescue my mother, maybe it would be easier, and he might be able to bring new insight to the rescue mission.

“Fine, I won’t go off on my own and try to rescue her. I’ll wait for Jake.”

Kayla looked into my eyes and she must have seen something, because she nodded and continued,

“Okay, so I looked for this Broderick guy and his henchmen Rubin and found some information on the councils security system as well as the schools system, although I think that they share a system of some sorts.”

“The council and school share a system? How does that work? How can the school and the council share a system unless they’re working together or something?”

“That’s my thought exactly. I think that there are some wolves working here, that are working for the council as well.”

“I thought the council was an individual unit brought in when there was problems between packs or to manage incidents with humans.” Hunter once told me the main function of the council when I was still living at the alpha’s house, just before I was shipped off to this weird ass school.

“Well that’s the odd thing about this. The council shouldn’t be involved and it seems that they’re the ones that hired the humans. They also seemed to be collecting information on every single wolf at this school and other were schools around the world as well as what their powers are.”

“Including me?”

“Especially you and Hunter. You guys are rated as interest, along with some others. They had Broderick and Rubin in a folder called under contract.”

“Under contract what does that mean?”

“I don’t know; it could be that the school or council has contracts out for their heads or it could be that they’re working for the council, but my monies on the bounty for their heads.”

It makes sense I guess, that the council would want to know what kind of wolves there are, incase they go rogue or they might need their help, but why hire humans? This is getting weirder, I would need to think on this a little more, maybe discuss it with Jake, see what he can dig out there at his academy inAlaska.

“Anyway, I found out that the warehouse is not actually a warehouse, it’s a manor of sorts. It used to be a warehouse and then they converted it into a manor. It’s called Master’s Manor it’s-“ Master’s Manor, like the map I found.
