Guitars and broken hearts

Chapter 18

Sam's POV

It's been almost a week since Melissa was admitted to hospital, and there's no sign of improvement. Luke hasn't spoken to anyone except for me and Beth. He stays up in our room on his guitar. Beth is staying in the X Factor house because her and Melissa's hotel room has run out, they were only supposed to be staying until Wednesday, and it's already Saturday. We have the show in about an hour, but the contestant lounge at the studios isn't bubbly and bustling like normal, it's quiet. Too quiet.

Beth came over and sat next to me. I wrapped my arm around her and we cuddled together. Beth hadn't been the same since Melissa wasn't here. She was quiet, not loud ; she was tired, not bouncy. Melissa's health had taken a toll on all of us.

After about 15 mins of cuddling, I was called for rehearsals. I was singing Little Things by One Direction. The second I told Beth, she broke down in tears.

"Why are you upset?"

"One Direction...Melissa's favourite... seeing them...with her" she whimpered between tears.

Luke's POV

I was sat in mine, Nicky and Sam's room, strumming on my guitar to Old Pine. It was my song for this week on the X Factor. I didn't really want to go out and perform, but I knew that I had to. Melissa would have wanted it. A few minutes later,there was a knock on the door. I opened it and Nicky was stood there.

"Are you feeling any better, Luke?"

"Not particularly, why?"

"We've got final rehearsals, the show starts in 20 minutes"

"Okay, I'm coming."

I grabbed the anklet I had bought for Melissa and clipped it to the hoops for a belt on my pants. That way, I felt like she was still with me.

Rehearsals went quickly, and soon our names were being called out one by one to perform.

"LUKE FRIEND!"

I could hear the cheers of the audience. This was more important than any other performance.This was for Melissa.

By the end of it tears streamed down my face. Nicole got out of her seat and came and hugged me. I clung onto her. All of my feelings had come out in a song and it was scary. I realised that Melissa could have gone. Our memories were short. I wondered if she had thought of me in her last moments. I thought about her carer Katy, who had come down to see her. I thought about her sister Eva who had come with Katy. They had been at the hospital every time I had been to visit.

I let go of Nicole and waited for the comments. They were all reasonably good but I didn't have a smile on my face.

I came off stage to see Beth and Sam holding my phone. The screen was lit up,someone was ringing.

"Luke, it's Dr Williamson." Explained Beth

"Oh."

I picked up the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hello, Luke. I just wanted to ask if you wanted to make your way to the hospital. Melissa's machines will all be turned off in an hour, she has made no sign of improvement so we will no longer be able to keep her."

"I'm on my way."

I briefly explained to Beth and Sam, tears streaming down Beth's face, before all three of us telling Marcus and making our way to the hospital.
