"I love you," I pause. "But I need you to go now. You need to leave."

He pulls away from, looking at me gobsmacked.

"What?" His voice cracks.

"We're only going to ruin each other."

"It would be a privilege to be ruined by you."

"Have you also watched The Fault in Our Stars recently?" I ask, recognizing the reference. "You little nerd, you have!"

"I can't just leave." He stays serious, wiping his nose with the back of his hand

"Lou, I need you to." I plead.

He just stares at me, completely broken looking.

"I'll call Nurse Chance, I need to be alone." I explain.

"Are you threatening me?" He squints his eyes.

"Yes, I am." I confirm.

He gets up from my bed, he stands in front of me, like a child.

"This isn't goodbye." I attempt to comfort him.

He swallows a lump in his throat.

"Tallulah, are you out of your mind? I can't-" he throws his arms in the air. "I'll leave, but I'm coming back later."

I nod, knowing I can't change his mind.

"Whatever happens now, know that I love you." I remind him.

"That sounds an awful lot like goodbye, Tallulah." Another tear falls down his cheek.

"You used to call me Tilly."

"Hello, Tallulah. How are you feeling today?" Doc comes in and asks.

It's only been an hour since I made Louis leave.

"Not well," I reply.

"I was afraid of that answer." He looks up from his clipboard.

I just stay quiet, waiting for him to explain.

"You remember how I told you the tumor on your lung would grow?" He asks.

I nod.

"Well, it's certainly been doing that." He informs me. "I hate to say, but there's not much time left."

I take a deep breath, squeezing my eyes shut.

"I'm so sorry. Is there anyone you'd like me to inform?" He asks.

I open my eyes, and look at him. It takes me a minute to gather myself, so I can speak.

"Ring Louis, but please, I beg you don't tell him." I beg. "Doc, I'm asking you to lie to him, you hear me?"

He nods, a sad smile on his face.
