Katara finished up her pancakes eager to get her Friday started.  She quickly wiped her mouth and washed her plate.  Katara then promptly ran to her attic and frantically got ready for the day.
"Hmmm..."  She murmured opening her dresser doors and throwing out a couple prices of clothing.  "No no.... Ah ha!" She proclaimed.  "This is perfect!"  Katara then turned around to see her dad, who had clearly been standing there the whole time, covered in tops and pants that Katara had thrown behind her shoulder while looking for her birthday outfit.
"I hope you finally found the right one," her dad said slowly while taking a blue Hello Kitty crop top of his head.  "Otherwise I think I would have been long gone in a mountain of clothes!"   He grumbled though clearly not upset.
Katara stifled a laugh and responded "I'll be right out!" And gave her dad a wink before going to her bathroom and throwing on a pair of  black leggings a blue tanktop and her moms hunting jacket.  She then quickly tore through the knotted mess she called her hair and French braided it.   "There," she said proudly and walked out the door pulling on her heeled boots.
Her dad looked up from where he sat on Kataras bed wearily holding a strange box in his lap, and if she looked closely Katara could see a few greying hairs on her dad's head.  His blue eyes were weary but they lit up when he saw Katara.    "Wow,". He said,  "You- you look just like your mother."  He started to cry silently from the mixture of sorrow for his love and joy for his daughter.  "She told me that when you turned 17, to give you this," her father pointed to the box in his lap.  It was grey and engraved with turquoise markings that showed a baby girl and an egg.  Then as Katara turned the beautiful box she saw another image of a small lizard like animal,  with.... Wings?  And a young girl holding the creature in her palm. Then on the back of the box their was the image of an teenager standing by the same animal,  maybe a dragon she mused, and the last side showed a picture of a beautiful women next to a humongous dragon!  It was beautiful really.  Katara could feel tears well in her eyes and she managed to choke out a "thank you dad."  Before she plopped down on her bed.  Katara noticed her dad leave her room distantly and with him seemed to leave a sense of joy.   Katara slowly found the latch of the box and opened it slowly. She expected it to be a jewelry box of some sort but upon further inspection she found that it did hold a necklace however the attention was clearly meant to be focused on the egg like stone of some sort.   It was grey with a glassy turquoise sheen over the top of it.  She slowly reached her hand to touch it her hands shaking in anticipation,  thy got closer and closer and...
"What are you doing katawa?"  Came a loud voice from the edge of Kataras bed.
Katara jumped on surprise her heart racing and she quickly shut the box with a bang.  "Holy Sheesh-Kabob Allison.  You scared me,". Katara said in a breathy voice.   Katara swung her legs of her bed and went over to Allison,  " Now shall we?"  She said to her little sister and they hooked arms at the elbow.  "Off to school we go again go again go again"  Katara sang to Allison as they skipped down stairs, the box completely forgotten.

"Hey Katara!" Exclaimed a loud voice from behind Katara. She slowly turned around crunching on the autumn leaves beneath her feet. She was then knocked over by a blond haired green eyes boy. She flailed her arms wildly before steading herself on he rough bark of an oak tree.
"Whoah woah," she she said the the boy currently squeezing all the air out of her. "Down boy." She laughed and slowly squeezed her way put of the boys grip. "I mean I know that you love me but..." Katara trailed off looking in confusion at the boy in front of her. "Hey Kenneth? Are you ok? You're crying." Katara said worriedly. "Are you sick? Did some one hurt you? I'll go beat them up." Katara started to walk off to beat up whoever hurt her best friend.
"No no no Katara." Kenneth said his greens filled with tears as he laughed at her. "It's just my baby's all grown up." Kenneth blowed his nose continuing what now she could tell was fake crying for his amusement.
"Ha ha." Katara responded to his act sarcastically. "Very funny." She sniffed and turned her back to Kenneth sticking her nose in the air ignoring him.
"Fine," Kenneth sighed "Happy birthday. Is that better?"
"Much." Katara responded as they both made their way into the highschool.  Katara loved the Fall.  At the beginning of the school year she was excited and her teachers had fun projects.  The crisp tang of Autumn was ever preset and the cool temp perfect for her favorite clothes.
"Ahh, our day of torture awaits is at Dreary Bleak Highschool. Kenneth's loud voice boomed over to one of the teachers who spotted Kenneth and frowned beginning to walk over to her best friend.  Katara then promptly strode away whistling ignoring Kenneth's questions.
"I don't know him,". Katara mumbles under her breath as she rested her back on the big old oak tree by the entrance of Drery Blake HighSchool.  Not the silly Nickname that Kenneth had come up with as freshmen.  She twirled with the stem of an Autumn Leaf as she watched Kenneth be yelled at by the teacher until a huge crowd had congregated and he decided to make a run for it.   Kenneth's green eyes frantically sweeped the grounds for someplace to hide.  Then he saw Katara just hanging out by the old oak tree. She gulped, and ran.
"Katara Jade Willams you little scoundrel." He shouted after her as Katara felt the crisp cool wind of he Fall spamming into her face. She was almost to the door where she could blend into the crowd and not be caught up in the embarrassment of her best friend.
"Come on almost there," she murmured pushing through people so she could reach the door handle before he could get her. Katara reached out to the door handle and... Made it in safely. "Phew" she whispered under her breath and quickly darted through the busy halls to her locker to start her school day.

--------------end of school----------------

"Bye Keneth!" Katara yelled to her best friend who was currently trying to flirt with a young blonde by the curb. Katara laughed at the playful never changing antics of her friend. Katara slowly began to clip clop her heeled boot home. Ignoring the math test Katara had today the school day hadn't been bad. Her science teacher reprimanded her for chatting a bit. All in all not a bad birthday so far. She kicked some leaves off he curb enjoying  the cool weather.  She watched as leaves of gold orange yellow and red fluttered down off swaying branches.  She began to mull over all of her life and deep in thought she almost missed it.  A women in green darted into the bushes off the street.  Her short blonde hair whooshed by Katara's face.  Katara, startled tripped and after regaining her balance managed to catch a glimpse of the daggers she had in her belt.   Wait what?   Knives!   Katara thought frantically.   Then she made the split second decision to follow the lady.   Katara looked around her to find that unusually it was quiet.   So Katara snuck into clump of  trees to see where the women went.   What she saw would change her life forever.
