So this question has sort of been answered before but, there are some facts that are missing. And I intend to fill them. If you are caught up on Adventure Time then you would know that Finn did have parents but his father left his mother and him. Also if you notice in that flash back Finn and his family are in the ocean. Which is also the cause of the ocean fear, anyway how did finn get to the ocean?
My theory involves another story from Stakes.
If you rember the humans in stakes went off to sea in fear of vampires however they were never found. So it is very likly that they did survive not well maybe, but still survived. Also this would explain Finns hat based on his heritage also the fact that he lived on a boat as a baby.
