power imbalances and its dangers

adults are humans- one thing i've told nyself throughout the years as i grew up with people refusing to acknowledge the scratches littering my arms and my inability to get up in the morning. they make mistakes, they have poor judgement, they let their emotions and past experiences get to them.

but i have also learned that that is no excuse. it is no excuse for causing a child any sort of emotional distress- if you willingly put yourself in an authority position, you are expected to act as an authority. not like an emotional person. it is a sacrifice teachers have to make, a sacrifice coaches make.

children are so naïve, putty under your fingertips. we are constantly on the lower side of a power balance, always pressed to the ground on the seesaw while the adults get to glower down on us.

i'm terrified of authority. i make friends with my teachers and be perfect so they don't know how afraid i am of them, how scared i am to be wrong.

authority is dangerous. if you are in a position to be on top of a power imbalance, you cannot use your emotions as a fallback.
