Scared, Riley tugs on the hem of her skirt. She looks at her boyfriend’s actions, analyzing them as he goes. She knows from the second that he starts with the ‘I’m not trying to be a bad guy but…’ that it was over.

She shakes her head, letting the hair that was tucked behind her ear fall. “Stop, Trent,” she warns, trying to stop any tears from showing, “You’re breaking up with me, I get it.”

Riley moves to collect her stuff. She takes her notebooks from the table and gathers them up and makes it right to the door before he speaks again.

“I did love you, Riley,” Trent calls out.

She pauses at the door, trying to figure out what to say but within a couple minutes, she finds it’s not worth the effort, and neither was he. “But it wasn’t enough, was it?” she asks back. It takes the boy by surprise and she takes the moment to leave without his attention. When he finally looks back up, she’s gone.

Riley takes comfort in the fact that no one is here after school but Trent, and she’s just left that classroom knowing that he won’t come out of there for another hour.
