2,905 minutes before the incident

"But yeah, I mean, I don't understand why he doesn't just tell me that he's unhappy with me and that he's into the other girl, ya know?"

"Maybe that's because he is into you?" I smirked, taking a sip from my strawberry banana smoothie.

"Well...," Naomi smiled, knowing that it was true. "I don't know." She explained as she twirled a curly piece of hair between her fingers. Of course, she did know that her recent crush, Sean Kinville, liked her but just as she had with all of the other guys, she dodged it, making things more complicated than they were. I watched my best friend while she looked hopelessly out the window. No wonder she had had so many guys before Sean. Simply, Naomi was beautiful. A sweet biracial girl with crazy uncontrollable but impossibly beautiful blonde-brown hair and blue eyes sat in front of me, worrying about one of the many guys she had been with. We'd been in the routine. She 'falls in love', she gets her heartbroken, we get smoothies, and we talk about it.

"Maybe I should just... stop stressing." She concluded, tinking her plastic cup against the black cafe table. I began to think about all of the guys before Sean. Vincent, Jeremiah, Danny, Lane. Eventually, I lost count and forgot most of their names. I wouldn't exactly call her a slut. She was just... Trying to find the right guy. And obviously that would take a while.

"Woo! You go Nay!" I congratulated her. She needed the extra support from me at times. Attempting to hide her smile, she cleared her throat and seemed to perk up again.

"So, fill me in." She stated, a smile beaming on her face. "Does Miss Ambris got a lucky guy on her mind?"

I smiled at the thought. I'd kinda like to be thinking about someone right now honestly, but I was too over loaded with my new job, and balancing my social life, and paying rent. I simply gave her a "Nope." and continued sipping away at the smoothie that was wrapped up in my palms.

"Aww. Come on! There has to be someone." She pried. If this were a movie, right now is when I'd smirk and say "Well... There is this one guy..." But, this was not a movie, and I did not have anything for any guys at the time. I only shook my head and she sighed, blowing a curl out of her face.

"Wonder what that feels like." Naomi laughed. She then stood up, grabbing her coat and belongings. "I got to go. I'm supposed to be watching my little brother," She giggled. "Thanks for the chat, Bris!" She smiled and walked out.

I soon followed after her, sliding into my red car and revving the engine up, smoothie in cup holder. I passed by Walmart, Big Lots, Forever 21... It took about 15 minutes to drive up to my little condo where I parked my car and got out, grabbing my items.

"Hey Ambris!" I heard a friendly voice call. I glanced over at the condo next to me to see Mr. Liddel pulling weeds with his son, Marcus. He had a smile plastered onto his face like he was enjoying it and stuck a hand out in a wave.

"Hi Sheriff Liddel." I waved back. Marcus looked up, wiping his face with a dirty hand and pushing up his glasses. Marcus was maybe a sophomore? He seemed pretty nerdy and I used to babysit him when he was younger. Didn't talk much. He had curly but short brown hair and squinted eyes, always having this look on his face like he was suspicious of something.

"How's the new job?" Sheriff Liddel asked, unearthing another weed.

"Fantastic, thanks for asking."

"Anytime." He answered, ending the conversation. I made my way into the condo, dropping my stuff as soon as the door shut and sighed heavily. Another long day at work followed by smoothies, which were really putting a dent in my paycheck. Lots and lots of smoothies were being ordered lately. "6:11." I spoke aloud, stealing a quick glance from the clock on the wall above the hallway door.  Collapsing on the couch, I found myself staring at the blank ceiling, counting the dots made from the texture.

1, 2, 3... 87, 88, 89... 235, 236, 237...

My eyes began to feel heavy around the time I reached 428 but quickly snapped open. "8:43." I whispered again as I glanced at the clock for the second time, taking a breather from the endless counting. It wasn't too early to go to bed so I made my way down the hallway, into the bedroom, undressed, and climbed into the white sheets that had been thrown onto the mattress. Quickly, my eyes once again dazed closed and pictures of all sorts filled my mind, composing a dream.

"Isn't it tragic?" A voice stated. Naomi? I turned my head in the dream to find her standing there, wearing a black dress and dabbing her eye with a tissue. She had obviously been crying and was sniffling. "She didnt deserve this."

"What are you talking about Nay?" I asked in a joking manner. My words dragged out long and slow, like I was talking in slow motion and it annoyed me that I couldn't speed it up. Part of me knew this was only a dream but the other part oddly recognized it.

"Ambris was such a sweet girl and then they just had to take her life," She snapped her fingers, "like that." Wait. I was dead? I looked down at the tombstone in front of us.

Ambris Dorsett

Born: June 12th

Died: December 8th

December 8th...? Died?!

Dream-me looked back at Naomi, who was now walking away and real-life-me started to get this sickening feeling. I don't usually dream but when I do, it's very vivid, almost like deja vu. "They just had to take her life, like that." I recalled in my sleep. I awoke, all sorts of scary thoughts swirling my head, making me anxious. Only one thing drowned out all of the others. December 8th..... That was two days away.
