Dancing with wolves

The glare of the strobes was harsh on her eyes as Ebony pushed through the crowd. Nora, her best friend hung onto her hand for dear life, this wasn't her scene. Ebony was often attracted to this kind of place and frankly it freaked Nora out, but what are friends for? Nora wasn't even sure how they had gotten into the club, Eb just walked straight in and the bouncer never batted an eye... Odd. They didn't even pay an entrance fee. Finally Ebony stopped, beginning to move her body creatively to the music, smiling cheekily at her bestie to cheer her up and spun her round playfully as if they were little girls once again. This forced a smile onto Nora's face.  People began to turn and looked at the girls curiously, what were two mundanes doing in a demon club? Of course both Nora and Ebony had no idea this was a demon club, actually they had no idea demons existed at all.

After a few minutes, two ripped teenage boys approached them. Their eyes were bright green, bodies tanned and protruding. They had a doggish look on their faces. The boys moved closer to the girls who continued dancing, shooting each other awkward looks and pretending not to see the them about to make a move. The boys eased their way into the girls space, one rubbing shoulders with Nora, the other began to dance behind Ebony...a little too closely. They danced for a while with the girls who were starting to enjoy themselves despite the annoyance of the boys entering their space when the taller boy asked, 'whats your name beautiful?' To Ebony. 'Whats it to you?' She asked suspiciously. The boy smiled devilishly, 'maybe I'm into you.' He whispered in her ear, 'do you wanna go some place quiet?' He asked quickly. 'No thank you.' Ebony replied before the boy grabbed her arm and yanked her closer to him. His friend then grabbed Nora by the shoulders, 'lets go.' He snapped at the other. They forced the girls through the crowd but neither's screams could be heard over the club roar.  As they exited the club through the back door into an alley way , the girls could finally hear their own screams and fortunately, so could a mysterious figure walking past the club. In an instant, the boy restraining Ebony felt a hard, cold hand on his shoulder. Suddenly the boy was 15 feet away, his body clattering against the alley wall. The man approached the other boy, dragging him away from Nora by the neck and throwing him against the same wall with superhuman force. Eb caught her breath and ran over to Nora who was frozen where the man had dragged the boy off her. Ebony looked over to the figure who stared at them both inquisitively about three feet away. 'Thank you.' Ebony managed to breathe out. 'What were you doing bringing a mundane to a demon rave?' He asked Ebony bluntly. 'Come again?' The man could infer from her facial expression that she was beyond confused. 'You are a shadowhunter aren't you?' The deep voice spoke. 'No, what on earth are you on about?' Ebony began to pick up the sharp features of her guardian angel, his dark hair, elegant cheekbones and piercing black eyes. 'You don't know any of this do you?' He asked, intrigued.  'Are they...dead?' Nora stuttered a little as she looked at the boys, both a bag of bones collapsed against the alley wall.

'No, Werewolves are notoriously quick healers.' He said instantly, 'you should go, its not safe for either of you here.' Ebony looked at him as if he had no head and then at Nora who faced exactly the same expression. In spite of that, the more Ebony thought about the boys, the more it made sense to her. Both girls were unbelievably confused. 'I'll walk you home.' The man said softly, ushering them out of the alleyway onto the busy street.

'What is your name?' Ebony asked the man, 'Raphael.' He said with the authority of a leader. 'I am Ebony and this is Nora.' She gestured to her friend who was trembling like a leaf, holding onto her hand so tight she had pins and needles. 'Its nice to meet you.' He said charmingly, smiling at Ebony revealing two large fangs that glistened in the moonlight. Nora hadn't noticed. Ebony was both terrified and intrigued. The white shafts gleamed at her,  'are the fangs real?' She asked seriously. 'Yes.' He replied mimicking her tone playfully. 'So Werewolves exist now? What does that make you?' Ebony asked, 'a vampire.' He said bluntly, staring into her green eyes with his huge black ones as they walked. 'This is like the worst joke ever!' She said smiling with her brow furrowed  in confusion. 'You really have no idea what I am talking about!' He laughed to himself darkly. 'Fine prove it.' Ebony said bluntly. Nora was too shaken up to enter a coherent conversation, whilst Ebony oddly wasn't afraid. 'What, chucking those mutts 15 feet away with one hand isn't enough?' He joked, looking at Ebony who stared back at him unamused.

'Where do you live?' He changed the subject. ' a couple blocks from here.' She replied as she studied his figure when he wasn't looking,  the three walked side by side: Ebony on the right of Raphael and Nora by her side. As they changed streets people seemed to slowly disperse. It was quiet.  They didn't really talk much after that. Raphael studied Eb, the way she walked, her chocolatey brown hair swaying a little; the way she ran her hands through it every now and then and the way she pursed her lips as she mused.  She pretended to sift through her thoughts as if to make sense of their unbelievably strange night, when in fact she too was taking this time to watch her new acquaintance, albeit in her peripheral vision. She sort of enjoyed the way his toned arms swung a little as he moved, just skimming hers; his posture, confident and strong, he shot her regular glances to make sure she and Nora were okay, his eyes filled with an interest and gentle concern that Ebony found both intriguing and warming. She felt safe. Nora on the other hand was still experiencing anxiety following their wolfy altercation, replaying the horrors of what could have happened in her head, uneasy in the company of this handsome stranger.

By the time the three reached the girls' dorm Ebony felt a light weight of sadness, knowing that she and Nora would part ways with Raphael. She rehearsed a 'thank you' in her head, wondering whether or not to make bodily contact; a grateful stroke of the arm, a friendly hug? How does one thank their vampire guardian angel?
