We didn't notice at first.

It was her secret for sometime. She was good at hiding them.

My mom first noticed a few bruises on her arm close to Christmas time.

"Mum it's nothing I tripped in the locker room!" Gemma wasn't the clumsy type being a dancer, but mum didn't really think much of it at first.

Then I saw it.

"SHUT UP!"

I was starting to fall asleep when I heard the yell. I thought it was a dream as I closed my eyes. But then I heard a faint scream. I sat up quickly in bed grabbing my glasses. That wasn't any girls scream. It was Gemma's. I stumbled out of bed as I heard it again. A muffled scream coming from outside my open window.

As I peered out trying not to be seen, I saw Jakes car across the street. Next a few beer cans scattered across our front lawn. But no sign of Gemma. Then I saw her.

She was across the street in the big grassy field lying on the ground with Jake towering over her. I heard my mother crying as she ran past my room, down the hall, almost falling down the stairs. I ran after her, beating her to the front door. I swung it open and began to run out across the street when my mother cried out

"HARRY NO!"

Startled, Jake freezes. His fist stopped mid air as Gemma looks up sobbing. He slowly looks back and mutters

"Marcel."

He turns his attention away from Gemma as he begins to clumsily walk towards me. All I feel is hatred. It's growing inside of me, fast. It's like a wildfire.

Nothing can stop me now.
