Once upon a time, there was...
I don't return his gaze. "I don't think I can forgive you for everything you caused in the past, even though I know you didn't do those things and you'd almost completely blacked out like Selvig and Clint did... It was brilliant of Thanos to use you like that... The pain is still too close to me to forget that for now... but..." I shut my eyes and... I know I won't be able to convince him so I enter his mind briefly and pull what I need to convince him to stay. "You have a part to play and so do I." I look into his eyes finally and remind him of the dead children and subconsciously tell him that if we don't stop this, everyone will end up like that. Earth, Asgard, and every planet in the universe. I know he doesn't want that. Then... I finally say, "Your mother knew who you would become. It's time to live up to that..." I send him images of her...
He is taken aback by this and doesn't try to look affected but for a moment I see the Loki that I saw in that cell on the Helicarrier; the one who woke from a nightmare; the real one. No pretending. I can see his younger self; the one that left his brother when he let go of the Rainbow Bridge... leaving forever.
His eyes drift down in thought... before he turns back into his sassy form. "I'm not going to have much choice am I?"
I snicker. "For some reason we're stuck together and I don't know why. But I know we're gonna have to kick Nebula's ass or else your reputation in the galaxy will be torched," I give him a judgmental look.
He cracks a half chuckle at that and looks ahead again. "Now we can't have that."
"No we can't," I say with a small smirk forming at the corner of my mouth.

Ash rains down on us as we walk through the city of dust. The fires have been quenched. The bodies have been gathered. The injured have been healed.
Smoke fills the skies heavy with grey. The remains of New York before us looks hopeless in the midst of previous mass destruction.
All of us linger, not sure what to do now.
"Do you think we have a chance?" Thor asks quietly.
"Maybe... But not if we stay here," Steve replies at the same tone.
"Where would we go?" Bruce asks. "I mean the Helicarrier is gone, the base at S.H.I.E.L.D. is destroyed, Stark Tower is obliterated... We don't have anywhere to go."
"That's not true," Natasha says quietly. She stands with her back to us and her arms folded, a cloth wrapped tightly around her wound that seems to be doing much better.
