Jennifer's POV

I wasn't naive about the world I lived in. I was human and humans weren't so prominent anymore. It wasn't something that happened overnight, but it was quicker than we realized as supernaturals became more and more abundant in our everyday lives.

But those lives quickly fell to pieces as more werewolves and vampires wandered in the cities. Dragons tended to stay to themselves and the fae lived off in the forest further from human populations.

Humans ran. The idea that creatures so much more powerful than them caused chaos and left destruction in its wake. I didn't run. I didn't have anywhere to run to. Ever since I had turned 15 I had been on my own and I did my best to only worry about one day at a time. But when the world started falling apart, people became panicked and started throwing each other in the way of death if it meant they may escape that fate themselves.

I ended up in a property camp. Which sounded a lot worse than it was. At least for me. I didn't always have food on my own and I was always wondering where a safe place to sleep would be. So, yes, I was technically for sale here, but I wasn't on the streets wondering if I would live to see tomorrow.

I had been sold a few times. The first few times were rough. I cried a lot and was punished for it and I didn't always willingly participate in "activities" that were demanded of me. But I had stayed in one piece and time after time, I returned back to the camp and was sold again.

The director's name was David. We had bonded over the years and he tried to keep me in pretty good homes. I wasn't exactly cheap to buy anymore because I was experienced and for the most part knew what I was doing. I had turned 20 a few weeks ago and this had become my normal.

David and I had our momentary relationship where I was in his bed and he didn't sell me out to others but we both knew it wouldn't last. Money was more important than companionship and he had a business to run.

This is why I wasn't too shocked when he woke me in the middle of the night to tell me to pack up, someone had bought my company.

"Who is it?" I asked as I grabbed my bag and stuffed the few items I cared about into it quickly. I glanced over my shoulder to see David looking nervously at the floor.

"I'm sure they'll take care of you." He replied calmly but everything about his demeanor said otherwise. He refused to meet my eyes as I walked to the door of the old home I had been put it. It wasn't anything to nice and there were several other people who lived there. But I had my own room and that's all I really needed.

"Your hesitancy brings me so much confidence." The flatness of my voice wasn't missed.

David eyed me warily, "I didn't have much choice in it this time."

I sucked in a deep breath and took a step outside with David closely behind me. He led me over to the office where I could see a very large town car parked out front and several guards standing around waiting.

I watched them carefully as I surveyed my surroundings and noticed another girl being pulled from her bunk and being dragged in the office's direction. I knew her.

"Be calm, Isabella," I insisted. She was carried towards me but her crying ceased and she tried to put on a brave face as she passed me and went inside.

"Who is it?" I demanded to know what I was walking into before I actually did any walking. "We've known each other for four years and you've never been this fucking weird about a purchase. Who is it?"
