You sit criss-crossed on the waiting room chair, your knee pressed gently against the wooden armrest as you stare down at your hands, your fingers mindlessly fiddling with each other.

He had gone in forever ago, and they wouldn't even let you back to see him. Every time the door would open, you would snap your neck to see if it was him, ready to get either the best news in the world or the worst.

But it was always either a doctor, nurse, or some other patient exiting the prohibited-from-anyone-else hallway to greet their own worried loved ones.

The rest of Shawn's family had left. Your parents stopped by, too, but they had left not to long ago, as the clock was inching towards eleven-thirty p.m.-- and still no sign of your boyfriend. You'd even moved to the chair that faced the door so that you could see when it opened instead of turning around each time.

You had given the doctor your phone number before they went in for the MRI and surgery, just in case his warnings of going all night were to come true, as they did. You finally decided to call it a night, and instead come to visit him first thing tomorrow.

As you gather your belongings, smoothing out your t-shirt and locating your keys on the coffee table, you hear the door opening from behind you.

At first, you thought maybe you'd imagined hearing it for so long that you were hallucinating.

But you spin around anyways, seeing Shawn's Doctor standing there. His dark almond skin was oily from the hour, glasses perched upon his nose slipping down ever so slightly. He notices you, pressing his lips into a thin line; something that could've been a smile if he'd tried harder.

"Oh," you say, startled, yet relieved at most. "Is Shawn okay?"

It seemed like a dangerous question, and the uncertainty of his eyes didn't help so much.

"He wanted to reveal the news of the surgery to you himself," he responds, sighing but trying to look enthusiastic, "so he sent me to come and get you. He's in recovery right now, I can escort you if you like?"

You nod quickly, immediately following him past the double doors and down the hall, going through a series of corridors in silence, your coat draped over your shoulder.

He leads you through a final set of doors with a black sign taped to it, and in bold letters, you could see the word, "RECOVERY".

The entire area smelt of hospital. Like freshly washed sheets, clorox wipes, germ-x, rubber gloves. You thought you had become used to it back in the waiting room, but here, it was even stronger.

You follow Shawn's Doctor to the very end of the large room, each patient separated by curtains.

Your sleepy boyfriend was leaning back against the pillow of the mobile bed, his eyelids droopy and his short hair messy. It used to fall over his eyes, until they shaved it off last year for radiation. It's grown back, but not all of it quite yet.

He was wearing a blue and white hospital gown, IV injected into his arm, a tube pressed to his skin to help him breathe. He looks up at you, his tired eyes lighting up as his gaze narrows.

"Hello, angel," he says softly. "I have news for you!"

His voice was raspy, hoarse from all the medication and lack of sleep. He smiles again as you sit on the edge of the bed, grabbing his hand.

"Yes, Shawn?"

He squeezes your palm, sitting up so that he was closer to you. He seemed more alert, though his voice only lowered.

"Baby, it's gone," he whispers, nodding to confirm. "It's all gone. I'm completely NEC."

You could feel him smiling at you, though you were no longer looking at him. You thought he was kidding, he had to be. It had been almost two years of nonstop hell. He couldn't be cured after one surgery, even though that was the point.

You immediately tear up, glancing at the doctor behind you to make sure he was telling the truth.

"It's true," the doctor mumbles. "We removed the tumor and there was no spread. Of course, there's always the slight possibility that the cancer can return, but your friend here is very fortunate. A year of treatment, and he should be cured for life."

You turn back towards Shawn, your eyes stinging as he strokes your hair. He began to cry, too, his hand moving to the back of your neck as he pulls you to his chest, his smile never fading.

"I'm so lucky," he murmurs into your ear, "so, so lucky. Thank you so much."

"What did I do?" you manage.

"What didn't you do? You never stopped supporting me," his voice became more sure. "All those funds on facebook, campaigns to raise awareness, the nights you sacrificed and spent at the hospital by my side. You didn't have to do any of that, but you did."

You pause, taking a moment to kiss his cheek as you pull away enough to do so.

"I can't imagine not doing any of those things. Every second we spent together was worth it."

"And now," he blushes, "we have forever to spend together. For as long as we both shall live."

Then he gave your whole body one more reassuring squeeze, one that sealed the deal.
